There's an utterly bizzare shift in film culture, and it happened when social media took off. In 2008 you just made a movie, like the Dark Knight and hoped it did well. People saw it and thought it was neat.

Then social media led to immediate reactions from everyone, and creators got super weird overly cautious towards reacitons. I swear, we need to close off creators in rooms with no social meida if we want them to make anything half decent. Joker 2 only makes sense as the creators freaking out to the reaction of the first film, fearing he's some incel reactionary hero and trying to tear him down.

Can you imagine Nolan raping the joker in Dark Knight Rises?

the 2008 writer's strike is the reason for much of what you described. movie studios pulled back on all kinds of edgy/risky material.

A little sure? But Todd Philips had a lot of creative control of Joker and Joker 2, and THAT is what he came up with. He decided to sabotage the story like that, and it only makes sense as him wanting to tear down the character.

I consider 2019 Joker to be more akin to something like Hannibal Lecter. He's an intriguing and entertaining weirdo, but he's clearly still a villain. Would a hypothetical Silence of the Lambs film feel the need to tear the character down?

Even in the same film, the cross dressing serial killer is condemned as a bad transphobic character. Every character needs to be seen through the lens of social justice or some shit. Characters can't just be. You have to apologize for them and if they go too far you need to reign them in. It's really obvious this is happening.

Biggest problem with society in general is that everyone takes social media way too seriously for and against whatever when 90% of all posting is trolls and bots. Like just because a bunch of Tumblr fan girls want their slash fiction to be true doesn't mean you actually have to make characters gay for no reason, and just because a lot of people seem to be making posts about criticism of your work doesn't mean they're a bunch of haters, and just because a lot of people seem to misunderstand your message and like ytour character for the wrong reasons doesn't mean you should crap all over the them.

as the years go on, the more i realize all that egalitarian horseshit we were fed in the 90s about how the internet was going to make everyone smarter and usher in a new age of enlightenment, i wonder how in the fuck did we get it so wrong?

Naivety, where we were just thinking of step 1: connect people, and then assuming the best, but not logically following through with things.

1. What's stopping malicious actors from just astro-turfing? It's only a few million dollars to pay people to spam a position and countries like Russia or China have the resources to do it.

2. When people start making money, what's stopping people from maximizing the money making aspects of social media?

3. Rare fringe people can be ignored in reality, but they can form powerful groups online that then can pressure and change society. Thus the internet quickly becomes cliques of niche weirdos banding together even if their views are wildly disproportionate from the rest.

4. What if angry hateful people become addicted to social media and just want to beam their views out 24/7? What if they get an audience? So the internet quickly becomes flooded with weirdos who think their opinions, no matter how insane, should be heard.

5. What if people react to the above, and then critique them? The internet then becomes flooded with haters and everyone yelling at each other.

It all flows logically if you assume people are rational actors and the ineternet is mostly an anarchistic system. Poli-sci and economics talks about these things all the time. The positive views of the internet came from naive actors who didn't think things through, or just assumed all people assume and want the best at all times.
