It's implied that the Maginot has been to several moons/planets to capture alien species. The eye monster is an intelligent being that is able to parasite any earth creature, just like the Xenomorph. The ticks are the same, with the fully grown form showing signs of intelligence (such as when it infects the water bottle). The plant and fly are the only exceptions. All creatures shown are also super natural in a way, since they are not bound by energy restraints. They can produce vast amounts of acid, toxins or other things that would require a lot of energy. The Xenomorph is the worst, being able to grow in hours and have supernatural abilities despite just being made from a single human body that they infected. Also, how would the Maginot expedition even work? If they found the eyeball, it would have it's own civilisation, but somehow they snatched a single one and nothing else?
It's a Peter Pan parody. The aliens aren't supposed to have a purpose for the same reason th fae/monsters in Peter Pan didn't. What I do like is the xeno is much more interesting when it's not the apex predator in an environment, while the regular humans were still a little too red shirty for my tastes, the oculus alien and the androids and the captain hook robot arm insert made the xenos less threatening and the world more interesting. The show wasn't perfect (the reddit CEO was the worst) but the world they created has potential.
