Were boomers really this reliant on stuffed shirt retards to choose their entertainment?
>>
Movie snubs only like what other people like first
>>
>>221222886
It was hard to have access even to movie trailers back then, so the show was one place where you could have a better idea of what whatever movie was coming out that week was about. I'm sure people still went to see a movie after one of his bad reviews if they were intrigued enough.
>>
I agreed with Siskel more than Ebert, but I was happier when I agreed with Siskel. I was always begrudgingly more in line with Ebert. Siskel's had a more pretentious comportment, but I think his love of film came from a deeper purer place. I'm probably just projecting, I just like the review where Blue Velvet broke Ebert's mind and Siskel had to remind him it was just a film.
>>
>>221222886
Ebert gave gladiator 1 star.

Ridiculous
>>
>>221222966
>It was hard to have access even to movie trailers back then,
Brown zoom larp alert.

Unless it was an art film with a limited release, every major hollywood film would have trailers ran as commercials for the entire duration of their theatrical run.
>>221222991
I think if a snob like Gene could enjoy something, that was a sign you had genuine kino that deserved a watch. While Roger was a good at reviewing for the common man, a lot times he could be too forgiving to shit movies, while on occasion bashing good movies for autistic reasons.

They had a TV show
>>
When Ebert gave reviews that didn't make sense to me it usually came from some sort of emotional reaction he had to the movie, like with The Doors. When Siskel reviews didn't make sense it's usually because he went in with high expectations and was disappointed like with Apocalypse Now. They're both good critics though and their show was very entertaining by itself, which is the real reason they were famous.

It isn't a strong adaptation, but a 0 from him on it is surprising. The source material is pretty well liked. Im not into myself, but not even half star. He's done half stars, a full 0 is pretty damning.

Like I can tell you, I'd rather watch the original Police Academy over North, so I think he may have been in a bad mood for some of these.

Oh Africa, Goodbye is that famous racist movie called Africa Addio. It now has a 7/10 IMDB which is good. I think after seeing it, I think of it as a important historical artifact of the time. If he reviewed it when it came out it probably pissed Ebert off being a hipster liberal of the day.

Fathom looks like softcore porn of the day basically but damn I might watch this during dinner

Green Berets looks like jingoistic trash in the middle of Vietnam so no wonder people hated it.
I, a Man - Warhol slop
If He Hollers, Let Him Go (1968) looks like a nigger reference probably trash
The Devils (1971)
The Statue (1971) nobody saw these
The Female Bunch (1971) - wow these women are busted as fuck to Zoomer standards they would be 1/10 and not allowed to be taken by smartphones, AI would scrub them out
Goodbye Uncle Tom (1971) - more retarded racism core
Prison Girls (1972) - pic related its Prison Girls huge boobs damn yeah
The Master Gunfighter (1975) - looks like trash
Death Race 2000 (1975) - CRIMINALLY underrated but Ebert probably was being gay because of the ultraviolence, I notice Ebert really hates the more gonzo shockers out there
Mandingo (1975) - he hates BBC so I think that makes Ebert 4chan and Siskel Reddit
I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
Caligula (1979)
Mother’s Day (1980)
Hardly Working (1981)
Death Wish II (1982) - saw most of these and yeah they are pretty much evil and I can see someone giving 0 stars to a wide newspaper audience
Police Academy (1984) - this is a great take because nobody should be making light of the police when they suck so much
Rude Awakening (1989) - ya nothing like a bad comedy
Erik the Viking (1989) - most people forgot this existed for a reason
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) † - this is perhaps his worst all time take, its a really good movie on this play and its hard to top

We weren't glued to screens as much back then. In the 80s, we would go the multiplex and pick a movie to watch from the ones available based on the posters. This was often the first time we had heard of the movie

>>
>>221225351
They're not really comparable considering one's a comedy and the other's more serious. Roujin does have the benefit of being written for the screen where as Akira was Otomo having to reconfigure his own manga (that hadn't even ended) into a screenplay and condense and remove so much that it's almost a different story. Akira does have the advantage in visuals, while Roujin has a tighter, original script.

Siskel and Ebert were great, and genuinely not out of touch. I'm impressed consistently by how Ebert would consciously stay within his era.

If you like them, or find watching their vids cozy on YouTube - buy the book Opposable Thumbs, it's the story of their rise to fame. There are a few absolutely adorable moments.

kek these are prime exploitation kino, but Roger being an oil driller, it's understandable why he hated them I can almost understand Uncle Tom, since it involved the directors making friends with the Haitian dictatorship and basically getting permission to have a bunch of poor Haitians to debase themselves in what's supposed to be an "anti-racist" documentary

Nobody did that. They read reviews because they had already seen the movie and wanted to read other opinions on it, or they read reviews to get a general idea of what was out and worth seeing. Nobody checked reviews for "permission" to see a movie they were interested in or anything stupid like that.

Hell, back then most people just showed up to the theater and picked a movie that sounded interesting and started soon. I wonder if anyone ever does that anymore? I feel like when I was growing up that was what we did 90% of the time. It was rare that we already had a movie in mind when going.
