Just watched this as a MK casual. Only read the wiki for the first one.Honestly not bad for what amounts to a B-flick. The Scorpion vs. Shadow fight was sick and Karl Urban did great as Johnny Cage. Shao Khan didn't really feel like a world-ending threat without the immortality hack, though. Also wish we got to see Raiden fuck some people up. Liu Kang vs. Kung Lao & Shao Khan was also pretty sweet.On the other hand, some of the fights felt kind of lame or weakly choreographed. For example, Jax vs. Jade was pretty meh. Also, not sure if I buy Jade as one of the ultimate movie-saving heroes. Kitana I can understand, and the finisher on Shao Khan was sick. Jax, Sonya, Shan Tsung, and the screaming banshee lady also felt relatively forgettable.Is Quan Chi meant to be an unserious character or did the movie do him dirty? And isn't Baraka supposed to be like unrepentantly evil?I give it like a 6/10. Hopefully the next one is even better.Also, do any of the other MK movies go hard? I'm open to the animated ones.

Horrible movie. The only thing it needed to do was hype up the fights and it couldn't even do that. The opening part is a perfect embodiment of the entire movie: Here's the most important moment in this king's realm's entire history. And he's on his knees by himself talking to just his daughter. Not surrounded by a hundred champions or court creatures or whatever. Then he strolls off to face his opponent in some random street, surrounded - again - not by a SINGLE champion, but a bunch of random peasants dressed in generic peasant uniforms, most of which were women. He should be surrounded by badasses, and those badasses should be saying stuff like "my king, let me take ur place etc. etc.", but then they'd be like "no, the king is the greatest warrior as u know" and so on, to hype up the guy. But instead it's just a bunch of flaccid women gaping placidly, like goldish. The whole rest of the movie feels the same as this scene, just a bunch of placid golfish standing around watching with dead eyes - IF there are any people watching at all, which there mostly aren't. It's just a bunch of pointless-feeling, disconnected fights that legitimately nobody in the movie itself seems to care about. Ironically, the whole Johnny being bewildered plot line reinforces this, since it unintentionally reinforces how pointless these fights seem to everyone to the point where nobody even knows about them.oh, and then after he kills the king, the guy is like "he shouldn't have brought you here" to the king's daughter. why? what an incongruous line? why did he say that?I could go on for a dozen more paragraphs on why I think this movie was shit, but I ran into the 2k cap so whatevre. only reason to see this is if you're fully brianrotted and only want to see the thing that you know so that you can clap.

Kind of funny, though, since the Queen then ended up killing a bunch of Shao Khan's NPCs and becoming a combatant in the next tournament as well.Also agreed on the strange interaction between Shao Khan and Kitana. He should've either just claimed her as chattel or attempted to kill her and maybe Raiden intervenes. Something like that. I didn't mind the relationship in the present timeline, though they didn't do a great job of fleshing out Shao Khan's attempts to control Kitana and her attempts to subtly undermine him. They should've given them more private dialogue if they wanted to flesh out that tension.I wouldn't call it brainrot unless you can't see the flaws. Some of the fights are pretty entertaining, and there's a lot of fan service for franchise fans.Hopefully the third one gets a bigger budget and a more competent writing/directing team. The CGI and green screen were pretty mediocre at times and the dialogue, outside of self-aware cheesy one-liners, like you said, was subpar.
