Why the fuck would anyone (especially boomers) watch this shit?

It's basically saying
>the American Dream isn't coming
>marriage won't fulfill you
>your children will be fucking useless
>your job will be humiliating
>you'll resent people more successful than you
>you'll still wake up every morning and go to work like a cuck anyway

It's basically misery porn.
>>
You have nothing else better to do?
>>
Because it was funny?
>>

>It's basically misery porn.

Not really. It was a humorous exaggeration of relatable problems the average person dealt with. It wasnt meant to be taken at face value.
>>
>>221229064
you watch it because it was on TV retard. there was like 12 channels back then.
>>
>>221229352
also there wasn't a bunch of gay online shit like nowadays. when you went home what you did is you put on the TV.
>>
>>221229064
Did it change with the seasons? I watched some episodes of the later seasons and it seemed like it was parodying itself. Was it always like that from the get-go?
>>
>>221229064
try this -
- get a job
- go to work 5 days a week
- pick one day, same day each week
- when you get home from work, flop down on the couch and watch 1 episode. You can have a beer or matcha tea or avocado toast, whatever you like

there. that's the experience.

It ran from the late 80s to the late 90s, it changed quite a bit over the seasons.
>>
>>221229365
When NO MA'AM starts to show up is when it starts going downhill
>>
>>221229064
It's another "zoomer can't differentiate reality from a fucken tv show" thread.
>>
>>221229064
It came out when you had shows like Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Growing Pains more wholesome type upbeat shows and Married With Children was the opposite of all of that so it was different for its time. It does change significantly from season one on though. Season 1 Peggy actually cooks and cleans whereas later on she's almost completely useless most of the time. I personally liked the show better when Steve was there but the Jefferson seasons were alright too.
>>
>>221230016
Did the guy who played Steve leave the show or was he fired and replaced by Jefferson's actor?
>>
>>221230099
From what I remember he left so he could do other work he missed working on Broadway.

Like anything of the time, it starts dipping around season 3 when it starts having some really gimmicky and over the top episodes.
>>
>>221230227
I know it's one of those eps you're talking about but I love the grocery store episode
>>
>>221229064
I never understood either. I was a child and young teen when it was airing and everyone seemed to like it but it made me feel queasy, like when I'd go to a sleepover at some kid's house and they were trashy or weird or it wasn't a wholesome environment.
It was weird watching a show where it seemed there was no food and everyone was kind of neglected and people were mean to their own family.
>>
>>221230272
Same. I felt stressed and sad when watching it, I'd just want Al to actually experience some happiness just once. The only time from the early seasons I remember is when he won some money gambling, had it taken but then tricked Steve into giving him his winnings too so that Steve's wife wouldn't be pissed about him gambling.

Not that anon but yeah that was a great one! They're living in the grocery store, stealing crap and the one thing they buy leads to the shopping contest against the Darcys at Al shows up with his decked out shopping cart

i need my blankey!!!
>>
>>221230227
Wrong, it got better with age. It was shit before Jefferson and peaked when it got into No Ma'am. Seven being an exception that sucked.
>>
Season 5 is one of the best seasons of sitcom TV. They're a family who sticks together no matter what and ultimately have a duty towards each. It's a show for white people so makes sense thirdies don't get it

This show was basically a manifestation of the realization that America was coming to an end. Not long after, 9/11 happened... then the great decline.
>>
>>221230358
Does that happen really late into the show? Because the first few seasons have them backstabbing each other constantly and putting their self interests first every time.
>>
>>221230272
>>221230297
I get what you're both saying. I watched it A LOT growing up. Though once I tried watching it while I was high and it was a little too much especially how mean they were. You take away the laugh track on a show like that it really comes across as a much more negative environment.

Were you one of those trashy kids? Maybe with a single parent and not a lot of structure? No hot breakfasts before school? Eating TV dinners or fast food at night and some cold cereal you get yourself in the morning?
Yeah, I'm sorry.
I totally did want to get home to my loving environment with my parents and pets and brother, and yes, my blanky. Which I still have somewhere.
>>
>>221230397
>You take away the laugh track on a show like that it really comes across as a much more negative environment.
It's already a nightmare, but lack of laugh track would probably be too intense imo. It seemed harder to watch as I got older since somehow that time period still had some hope in it even if his situation was bad.

I also end up depressed when trying to watch Full House. It's so goddamn upbeat and happy and they all have everything they could ever want, and I know that a time like that no longer exists.
>>
>>221230442
I was making fun of you but I remember that feeling. It was a homesick feeling, and I did want my mommy and my blanky.

>>221229064
It's early demoralization slop. Ed O'neill should be ashamed.
>>
I used to be really into Letha Weapons and she was on the show as a stripper once.
>>
>>221230457
I definitely get what you're saying it's just you got to keep in mind it's a satire of the typical American sitcoms at the time so it was their intention for things to go wrong or people be mean to each other. It's kinda like a Greek Tragedy especially when the Bundys experience success but they some how are foiled by by their own mistakes or some deus ex machina.
>>
>>221229064
The first season was kind of that way. But it quickly just became a hornier Simpsons.
>>
>>221230442
faggot
>>
>>221230580
The first season was a bland sitcom where the Rhoades played straight man against the Bundys. The mid seasons were comedic misery porn with Playboy model guests, the latter seasons were a live action cartoon
>>
>>221229064
Are you retarded, you stupid fucking faggot? The characters in the show aren't necessarily meant to reflect the person watching or some kind of universal truth about society.
>>
>>221229900
The biggest problem is that the longer the show goes on, the more Al tends to lose in the most brutal, humiliating way possible. At least in the early season, it's more balanced, and when he does lose, he usually gets even.
>>
>the christmas episode when Santa falls from a helicopter

>severe penalty for early withdrawal

Struck a nerve, did I?
Condolences on your shitty parents.

I love that episode. David Ruprecht has a cameo in that one. He was the host of that gameshow Supermarket Sweep from 1989-1994 and later 1999-2002. Funny thing too is he was on the recently leaked list of attendees at the Bohemian Grove.

Wow Al is literally me. It a parody of the faggy wholesome sitcom slop at the time. Its not that deep.
