It's always bothered me that people always compare JEJ and Denzel but leave out the sons, when the sons body language set the scenes just as hard.

I always thought Denzel's son was the reason why it felt much more sitcomy, the way he's stumbling in, the slouching, the casual delivery in his lines, and I feel like Denzel had to play into that to compensate. It felt like I was watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air, or Michael Kyle from My Wife and Kids lecturing Junior. To put it simply, he felt much more "bumbling" and "dumb-sidekick" esque than JEJ's son

Onto JEJ's son, it helps that Jones' booming deep voice and threatening composure set the mood, as well as the audience's silence, but the son's meek body language helps a LOT. And so does the stammering and the facial expressions. I've watched this like 5 times and each time I'm half expecting him to burst into tears, he feels way more vulnerable.

One of Hollywood's biggest misses was not adapting Fences into a feature length film with JEJ.

People just can’t handle there being multiple different valid takes on the same subject and have to make it all about which is better like a child
