Berry won because no black had ever won best actress before, it was 2002, and the academy had no choice, zero, they had to give it to a black. Berry has proven her talent over the years since, with Catwoman, and a sea of forgotten bad pictures featuring her bad performances. She really got lucky with Dorothy Dandridge and MB, she’s not a good actress, she’s often serviceable enough though. But is the Oscar a strictly talent based award? Isn’t it common knowledge that those awards are often based on careers, past snubs, friends, the hot political themes of the time, campaigning, etc? Did she deserve it for acting? No. Did she deserve it for being the first black woman to receive an Oscar? Sure.
