The last two episodes were the weakest of the season. Instead of ramping up, the horror element was almost absent.
>>221231570the problem is things are happening that seem to have no effect on characters.
>>221231570I couldn't buy Rhys in that Americana Jaws Amity milieu. Better suited for Mossad roles and glowies. His HBO serial killer show sucked too.
Shows need to stop doing the multiple writer/director thing. Too many cooks in the kitchen and it always suffers for it, with some episodes being standouts and others being absolute dogshit.
It's reddit
>>221231570the mayor's son is cute
>>221231570Why do you keep reposting this dumb opinion as a thread starter? The worst parts were, far and away, the clowny zombieman and the reddit corporate fallout meme sacrifice tapes.
When they were going through the genealogy thing, I was hoping his son wouldn't be the last descendant because it would be so predictable and cliche. Was very happy with Ruth. Then they backtracked on that and really made his son the last descendant for the big ''twist''. This show was disappointing and I hate you faggots for recommending it in the FROM (a much better show) generals. I will never listen to you again.
>>221233739He's ugly and brown but has 2 white parents. Can casting directors not notice when 2 white people have a dark brown son? Absolute laziness
>>221234386You didn't pay attention. His son is the last descendant of the evil dark entity. Makes sense for him to be brown.
That’s disappointing

>>221233715No it isn't you fucking homo.
>>221231570It's always the same fucking problem, this ending feels like a mid-season curveball but since shows aren't allowed to have 20 episodes anymore we gotta wait 3 or 4 years to get to an actual conclusion
>>221234386>>221233739He's not his son lol, the mother was a hooah
I loved it. The 9th episode was one of the weaker ones, yes, but overall it was great. I look forward to season 2
>>221231570The fact that this show hasn't gained mainstream notoriety and casuals YET simply confirms a theory I have had for a couple of years now. The current generation. Particularly the woke generation will not latch onto something until it is PERCIEVED as popular. If its not perceived as being popular then they have no use for it because there is no clout to be gained from saying that you like it. For modern wokes and casuals there MUST be clout gained from being into something. If not then they are simply not interested in it. But once it crosses over into being perceived as popular then look out. They will show up and try to take over. They will also do their best to farm clout by saying they were here all along. So many cases where this happens its unreal.

>>221236050I've been avoiding it because Apple tv seems to mostly produce woke trash
>>221236050Maybe it just sucks
>>221236094There is this one far right Christian writer author on youtube that is raving about it. And he's truly full on right wing and calls out shows for being gay especially apple shows and even he is raving about it because its not woke. The show not being woke also might be why the MSM isn't pushing it either but that's just a conspiracy theory on my part.

>>221236152>The problem is it was made for multiple seasonsThat's not a problem. Nearly all of the relevant questions from the first season were answered.
>>221236197Yeah and? There will be more mysteries, there will be more answers and more seasons that you will have to wait YEARS to see, to the point where you don't care anymore and the thing becomes another lost or from or whatever other forgettable show.
>>221236166Naa I'll just watch shows that don't hate white men
>>221231570Nah it was good. The last episode was pretty damn strong, outside of a handful of choices. It's rare for a show in the modern day to be able to be carried hard by the strength of acting performances and a moral dilemma alone, let alone one that is a season finale. A lesser show would have resorted to spectacle. The only shows I can think of that have done it deftly without resorting to pure drama or feeling preachy are golden era Trek (TNG/DS9) and more recently The Orville. The only problem with the finale was Bechir's 'soap opera the OC mmmm whatcha say' shooting and potential killing of Ruth. I don't know what I would have done differently though. They wanted to leave it open ended, and had to recut the original ending for the renewal I guess. But is Ruth dead or not? Them throwing the brooch suggests she is, but showing her still conscious after being shot suggests otherwise. But if she's alive then they're going to have to explain why she was shot while at home during a thunderstormAnyways yea I thought everything outside of Bechir shooting Ruth was good, or they should have fully committed to the killing with whomever who attempted to kill Ruth after Tom stayed his hand (be it Bechir or Wyck) also killing themselves.
>>221236352People don't mind waiting as long as mysteries aren't built on top of other mysteries but are neatly resolved.People only mind if it's mystery box, or if it feels meandering filler without a strong focus.Wednesday s1 - strong whodunnit. Mysteries resolved in a timely fashion. Every scene has a purpose of advancing the plot or introducing us to something new to the world.Wednesday s2 - pandering slop. A bunch of inconsequential red herrings that should have been nixed in the writer's room. Returned to visit multiple resolved plots and characters from first season for no reason like trying to squeeze drops of water out of a wrung out towel. Most scenes felt like asinine filler, the worst of it being the kpop body switch montage. I don't even remember what it's about when I remember clearly s1 being about the puritan founder of Jericho.
>>221231913This.
>>221231913>>221236645Nah that's "did you even watch it" tier criticism.Shep, Reverend, Shaman, Janny all dead.Tom nearly died to hag and experienced a mental break and slow descent into madness the entire season.Compare this to X-files or something where Scully brushes off every paranormal thing every week, Fringe, LOST, Supernatural, FROM, AHS and it's no contest. Widow's Bay is better all around.
>>221236802Most of those are episodic MoTW shows. WB is in a bit of a no man's land between episodic and serialized. It has the pacing, tone and structure of a serialized show but with episodic plotlines that never feel like they resolve since everything else is telling you that this show is serialized. The worst offender of this was the mushroom episode. Nothing that happened ended up really mattering at all. The show is just very disjointed and unfocused. It has "and then" writing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGUNqq3jVLgDon't get me wrong I still enjoyed the show (particularly the first 4 episodes) but it has some serious issues.
>>221236973the issue is that it's half of a show. Add the other 10 episodes, give it a proper conclusion and it'd work just fine
>>221237015The "and then" writing is an issue that can't be resolved by new episodes. They dun goof'd.Seriously, go watch the show with that writing principle in mind. It's jarring.
>>221236973Mushroom episode is actually very good on rewatch. The plot device is used to rapidly develop the plot (which would feel lazy or cheap on a less well-written show). So if you were fully engaged with the plot episode 5 was very rewarding.
>>221236973>The show is just very disjointed and unfocused.I disagree. The show is written in three acts and it flows fairly well. The only disjointed part was episode 6.Act 1 "Setup": Episode 1 to 4Act 2 "Confrontation": Episode 5 to 8Act 3 "Resolution": Episode 9 and 10
I was fine with the show until the finale. Even episode 9 where not much happened it at least everything up properly. Then nothing happened in the finale and the whole thing was just a cliffhanger. Fuck that.

>>221231913>>221237754>the problem is things are happening that seem to have no effect on characters. This is such a false statement in makes one wonder if you are actually retarded or just pretending to be retarded for keks. Just about every major character has serious character progression from the first episode to the last. The mayor (who is the main character) goes from a wimpy non believer drowning in ankle deep water to a true believing stone cold killer by the final episode. The non-believing Sherriff as well. Saying nobody is affected is just more smoothbrained retardation.
should've gone full camp and had Ruth turn into a witch that Tom has to fight off. Have her be angry that there are tourists on the island and it makes her work extra hours when she just wants to go home early every day. We didn't need almost all of the episode dedicated to hearing Ruth tell her life story just for a lame reveal that, shocker, Tom's wife is her daughter and his son is the last descendant. Then the storm ends when a random character we know nothing about is sacrificed in the room he accidentally discovers. It was all lame as fuck.
>>221231570Last episode was comfy as fuck you people will complain about anything
>>221237920>should've gone full camp and had Ruth turn into a witch that Tom has to fight off.Zero moral quandary and would have been extremely cliche'd.

>>221238250a lot of us saw it coming but it didn't matter because it was executed so well and a satisfying plot development for tom. i don't mind the son and his friends. they're kids, they act like kids.
>>221238250>also i hate mayors sonThat was one of the only notes I had for the show going forward. Other than that no notes at all. But going forward they need to make the son more likeable if we are going to care whether he gets sacrificed to Chuthulu or not. Like give him his own agency. I was thinking maybe an episode where he does something heroic instead of merely being a s.imp getting manipulated by a bunch of even more annoying potheads.
>>221231570Last two? Fell off after the mushroom trip half way. Also 8 is the worst episode.1 and 4 were great, 2 was legitimately scary, 5 was hilarious.

>>221238357Ep. 5 is objectively the worst episode. Its even rated the worst on imdb so its official. Bakeheads insisting its the not the show's one boring filler episode be damned.
Yeah I wish there was some other reason that the demon didn't go away after the zombie dude's death. I was hoping the next episode would show Tom and his son ferrying off the island only for his son to die and that's how he finds out the curse is still active. Two birds one stone, annoying son dead and knowing shit is still bad. Plus it would break Tom, which would be great. Instead we get more dumbass son scenes and all the drama that comes with it. Also the boogeyman scene was so extra that it felt dumb.>he's in the house, not a single girl notices>he sprints through the room causing thudding so loud Patricia could hear it outside then jumps through the fucking window and lands>not a single girl even looked or apparently heard shitLike I get the show is comedy, but some of the scenes are just so stupid. The birthday party episode had good comedy, when you realize everyone making fun of the tiara was actually making fun of her shaman headdress and that Rosemary knew what was up the entire time and just went with it, funny as hell and the premise of a cursed witch book disguising itself as a self help book for this cute little autistic hag was funny as hell too. Boogeyman scenes, dumb and over the top.

>>221238435Throw 8 into its own bad category and Id agree.
>>221238488Its like 8% comedy. Normal shows are filled with reddit quips every five seconds. The comedy in Widows Bay is drier and subtler. The showrunner is from Parks and Rec but is smart enough to keep the comedy to a bare minimum and doesn't let it ruin serious or dramatic moments with reddit MCU style quips.

>>221238914Never heard of Strip Law. I watched the first half of From when it was free on Prime for a minute and it was more stretched out typical mystery box and it was a struggle to get as far as I did.
>>221236441I like Widows Bay S1 overall more than Servance S1 even though the final two episodes of Severance S1 are better than any single episode of Widows Bay. It just that the WB season is stronger overall. For me WB is my personal favorite show since Andor. That's how much I have a boner for this show. It avoids obvious pitfalls like the plague that other shows would normally fall into.
>>221231570What is this show about? Stranger Things but for adults? Its not like From is it? I hated From.
>>221236074They complain about all of the ad algorithms yet still rely on them to tell them what to like and think. Its nuts. Apple doesn't really advertise their shows until Season 2. >>221239535>Stranger Things but for adults? That's The Boroughs (now cancelled). It's more like The League of Gentlemen.
>>221239535>Stranger Things but for adults?Pretty much. But its not a show like From where is just a one big giant mystery box that you know is empty. Widows Bay is more of an old school monster of the week type show with an overarching season plot underneath everything like how shows like X-Files used to do. Modern shows are basically 8 to 10 hour movies where individual episodes blend together because everything is 100% serialized like with Pluribus. Every episode was serialized with no real three act structure of its own. Widows Bay is more old school three act structure with its individual episodes. But at the same time there is a major arc that hangs above everything.
>>221239646Sorta like American Horror Story then?
>>221239729More episodic than American Horror Story but yeah
>>221239729>Sorta like American Horror Story then?American Horror Story Season 1 kind of. But Widows Bay has better characters and it has subtle dry humor sprinkled here and there that absolutely works because its not tired reddit marvel style humor. There are no quips.

>>221239823
>>221238504Yeah "subverting expectations" for its own sake is how you get crap like TLJ. >>221240799accounting for audience reactions usually pushes creators to make things shittier not better. that's why i'm worried about season 2. just keep doing what they're doing and everything will be fine.
>>221231570Terrible ending, they should have just wrapped it up or make it a cliffhanger.I won't suffer through another season of boring tropes just for the magical solution that saves the major's son which is of course his dad sacrificing himself for him.
>>221231570I want a viking show spin off.Early explorers from Erik The Red settle on this island. No survivors.COMON APPLE.
>>221240920It basically was a cliffhanger when you think about it.The keeper of the island, his son, opened the basement and it wants 8 more now with the bell tolls - the video was clear on that instruction. That's why Kenny the maintenance guy died and it all stopped, because his son offered the sacrifice.
>>221231570The show started losing me when they did the time jump to the replacement wife of the town founder. Episode 6 I think. First five were great.
>>221238250I had two theories, this ending was one of them. the other theory was that Ruth knew all along and Tom was gonna walk in on her communing with the Island and readying a sacrifice.>>221238196There's nothing to fix. You just have to be there for her.
>>221238326There's the one scene between Evan and the Sheriff that humanized the kid a little bit, but only in relation to the Sheriff's view of him and the other Island kids. The scene where Tom returns home after the events with Richard Warren and is confronted by Evan, but no one is angry and they bond a bit over his mother's photos and letters also did a bit to endear me to Evan. But again, they needed another character to make that happen. By himself Evan is a faggot. They're not gonna kill him off till there's another member of the bloodline though, the Island won't allow it.
>>221236050Grace Randolph is woke as fuck and she loved the show. I don't know why the fuck did you even bring /pol/faggotry into this. Just leave it at normalfags. But then it's not a "current generation" thing, normalfags always follow what is already trending.
>>221241038Of course but season 2 will start with very low stakes again in 4-5 years until the very last episodes, it's so pointless.

>>221241195Mommy Grace and her fat thicc ass is the reason I found the show in the first place. She got early access to the show and recommended it prior to the Season premiere. As far as normies and wokes showing up after it gest popular that's exactly how things tend to play out. Another Anon mentioned Rick & Morry and I pointed out how that is exactly how the RL timeline played out with that show once it got popular. There is ALWAYS a danger of wokes showing up late to the party and taking over and turning things to shit. Its not the normies that ruin everything. They are simply late to the party and follow popular trends. Its the wokes that show up late and actively try to take over and ruin things.
>>221241426Critics who reviewed the show including Grace Randolph are woke anon, you realize that? Technically they arrived first by this metric. Either way in reality only people who can ruin this show are the writers themselves if they fuck up Season 2.
>>221241522There are only like three major channels in my feed that have reviewed or even heard of Widows Bay. The rest of the reviews are from channels I have never heard of. Mommy Grace is the biggest channel I have seen mention the show but the rest of the channels. Especially the "Drinker" crowd have been totally silent and it isn't even on their radar yet. There is one turbo right wing christian channel that I subscribe to that raved about it though. He always complains about shows being woke and gay and actively mentions shows being "woke" and "gay" out loud. Even he went out of his way to rave about Widows Bay for not being woke.
>>221237897the character development is sitcom tier since everything is fixed in 20minutes or scooby doo's over a 'to continued' arc that almost goes nowhere likd how the kid HATED dad for a whole 20minutes about hiding the truth about his mom and how could Tom not become a believer after he had a sea hag and a zombie fuck up his daily life, again do something original
>>221241813>how the kid HATED dad for a whole 20minutes about hiding the truth about his momKids are schitzo like that IRL. Also Tom explained how his mom was ACTUALY RETARDED from a stroke and was near homicidal. Like smother a baby with a pillow levels of homicidal. So yeah it kind of checks out why he hid the truth. From the sons point of view it all checks out.
This is the first show I've seen that actually gets the philosophy of the Trolley Problem, every other show eventually frames it as a "lesser of two evils" with elements of selfishness.

The humor was almost absent the final 2 episodes, but at the start of the season it was the main thing keeping me entertained. As a supernatural horror it's just not that deep or unpredictable because of its use of tropes.
>>221242845>>221241284I really disliked 8 and don't know why its rated so highly, I get the Halloween reference but the Boogeyman did absolutely nothing for how much he was hyped in the previous episodes, the two people he killed literally had to run straight into him to die, he had the chance to kill the mean girl clique but instead jumped off the window because ???, it was just a waste of what was a pretty scary looking entity.

>>221242286Nah, Ruth didn't even consider that sacrificing one person to save many is heroic in and of itself. Sure life comes at you randomly, but you have a way to control it and the onus is on the lever puller to make a decision and not "let life just pass em by even if it sucks". You can say "you are choosing to kill 1 person" but you can also say "you are choosing to save X amount of people"People with Ruth's philosophy would be a town full of idiots who get pillaged, raped, and sold off to slave traders because "well that's just life lol!"
