The criterion 4K is immaculate, and even their regular blu-ray looks great.

Mill Creek, on the other hand, releases consistently terrible quality budget transfers, even worse than Vestron. You should have sprung for the definitive version.

I can't think of a hotter black chick starring in horror right now, honestly. A buddy of mine told me recently he thought Zendaya was hotter than Zazie, which floored me considering Zendaya is one of the ugliest actresses currently getting work.

Night of the Comet was kino, extremely comfy first half.
Though at first I thought it was taking a turn that was too grim, but by the end I thought it wasn't grim enough. I kind of wish the whole film had just been fucking around in the 80s apocalypse. I guess I'll have to rewatch Combat Shock for that.

Let's play a game, /hor/.
Someone replies to me with a slightly scarier movie, then someone else tries to reply to them with a slightly scarier movie than theirs. Remember the goal isn't to just be scarier, it's to BARELY be scarier than the previous movie. If multiple people are replying to the same thing just reply to both of them or pick one to reply to.

Starting with Man-Made Monster (1941) which surely definitely was the sort of absolute horror you should avoid taking a first date to a drive-in viewing of lest she paint your passenger seat brown. I'm shocked they approved this for viewing. When he started glowing I got so scared I crawled up my wall.

>Haunted by a traumatic past, Emily finds solace as a camp counselor while navigating grief, witchcraft and the power of female friendship.
>Emily is the root cause of two devastating tragedies very early in her life. She feels the weight of these accidents like a curse has been placed upon her. Her dad suggests she go to a Camp for troubled youth to ease her guilt; she can be a counsellor there. When Emily arrives, she is taken in by the other counselors, they accept her as she is and wrap her in a veil of peace & forgiveness. Emily stands at the forefront of a new kind of life, but there’s a voice out there in the woods she can’t quite seem to ignore. The voice is whispering, she’s telling Emily to go home.

I’ve got the Criterion of that, and it is indeed great. It’s got a wonderfully 70s interview that Tom Snyder did with Romero and Don Coscarelli in I would assume 79 or 80, and it’s all polyester suits, feathered hair, and chain smoking on TV.

Romero always had a cigarette in his hand. What a shocker that he died of cancer.
>>
>>221232387
Ben also would have survived if he had actually called out to the rescue team instead of lurking around in the shadows. They clearly weren’t zombies, because he was drawn out of the cellar by the sound of dogs and guns.

That’s one thing I like about the 90 remake, is that Barbara actually calls them out on what amounts to a dick-measuring contest between Ben and Cooper fucking everything up. They don’t listen, but still, it was nice that it was even addressed.

Do you watch it with the Italian or English dub? I always go with the English dub. I still hate the post-sync style they used back then, so fucking stupid.
>>
>>221243012
Yeah english. There are films I'll watch in italian even if there's an english dub but generally it's if I think that's how the film was originally spoken and intended. But I mean half of that one is in NY.
>>
>>221243052
Not horror, but I remember pirating Goodbye Uncle Tom or the other one, I'm not sure, and it only had the Italian dub. It was too weird seeing a southern black church where all the black people spoke Italian.
>>
>>221243052
With these Italian movies I have a simple rule -if it take's place in US or the characters supposed to be English speaking i watch it in English. If it's in Italy I watch it in Italian. Like the last movie I saw was Seven death's in the cats eye - that made sense to watch in English. And zombie Holocaust I saw last week. But like a blade in the dark i watch in Italian.

Just finished. Another Vietnamese flick. I'm still kicking myself for not going to see the viet One Cut of the Dead remake when it was out for just a week. Anyway, this one kind of sold itself as being about a demonic pig but ended up being a much more standard ghost revenge movie. The only thing that set it apart was it was a very dry sense of humor that I vibed with. Like a one armed man going out to investigate in the dark with a flashlight taped to his hook hand or a tranny trying to one up his competition in an object-balancing contest by balancing a motorscooter on his head (there were a LOT of trannies in this for some reason.) Apparently this is third in an animal themed ghost trilogy after one about a bear and one about a cat. The cgi is exceptionally good for something from this country. I was struck with a farting bout midway in and I hope nobody noticed but fuck them anyway.
I also went to Backrooms again and found it extra comfy a second time. An isolated alcoholic deciding he's happier in some nightmare furniture dimension than in the real world is very relatable for me.

Also
>Robert Eggers recently teased, “It’s the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”
Nosferatu was taxingly joyless so I can only imagine this one is about eating babies.
>>
>>221249731
I have not, but now I plan to watch them. honestly I'm tempted to do a double feature and watch one of them right now but I should probably get some sleep (though honestly I'll probably be up until sunrise either way)
I had heard they were extremely good, I just honestly don't usually watch horror movies
I had planned to see Hokum in theaters with a friend who basically JUST watches horror but our plans fell through, and I'm hanging out with him tomorrow and just realized today Hokum was out on digital, so decided to watch it tonight and hopefully talk with him about it tomorrow

>>221249779
I thought Nosferatu was great, and The Lighthouse/The Northman were masterpieces, so I'm hype no matter what
I tell my friends Northman was the real live action Lion King lol

It's highly kino and will make you want to watch 3 more detective films after it. I assume the lukewarm critical response was about Polanski's reputation at the time.

sweet

before I go, other horror movies I've seen recently:

I thought Keeper was fantastic, felt like more of a "feminist Evil Dead" than Evil Dead Rise did (in a good way)
new Silent Night Deadly Night remake was hilarious
Psycho Killer was cheesy but very fun, slightly lame ending though

Deep Water was fun, turn your brain off shark stuff except it actually looked like a real movie which is unlike. Missing an animatronic though.
Apparently it was produced by Gene Simmons. It seemed like it was made to appease the Chinese market and their love of killer cgi animals. Also they even killed off the white guy so he couldn't bone the sexy asian air hostess.

>this is where the fun begins
>>
>>221250555
just finished it
it was fun but the last 20 minutes felt kind of farcical, basically everything from the satanist ritual scene onwards was just silly
the ending feels like they didn't know how to end it and just went "eh, fade to white"
also I totally saw it coming that the blonde was satan from the first glowing eyes scene
I'll have to check out the book and see if the ending is any different
>>
>>221251235
i suppose more specifically, the ninth gate was her pussy lol
also the ritual wasn't the bullshit Balkan came up with, but rather the trip that Corso undertook
he literally walks through all the scenes depicted in the engravings, in retrospect the hanging man and scaffolding scenes make it kind of obvious
and although you don't really see it in the same frame, the book was stashed above the hanging man in relatively the same location as the flaming sword was positioned in the engraving
>>
>>221251235
I had no clue where it was going with blondie so I think that added more to it. One other thing I loved about it was is that it has an amazing soundtrack.
>>221251291
>the ninth gate was her pussy lol
kek I'm going to remember that
>>
>>221251316
the soundtrack was enjoyable but felt kinda equally cheesy at times
also all the optical effects really stand out, though I don't hate them. the hazy air visuals when Balkan poured the gas was actually pretty well done imo.
>>
>>221251345
Aside from Polanski personally I think that's why critics didn't like it, it wasn't as grimly serious as it could have been. But I appreciate it for what it is a lot more now, I love that he smokes an insane amount of cigarettes throughout it.
>>
>>221249914
This is how I feel about Oz Perkins
His scripts are unfinished and undercooked. Blackcoat's Daughter was fine but, Jesus, learn to polish a plot

I watched "The Kiss of the Vampire" (MCMLXII), a Hammer film but a bit different this time. It does not have Dracula in the title or Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing starring. And it feels like a proper story and not like a sequence of connected scenes that are improvised to fill 90 minutes and have some Dracula in them.

In an astonishing twist, the vampires are killed by a swarm of bats summoned magically by Professor Zimmer in the end. Which I thought was a surprising concept after bats being vampires in a different form in all the other vampire films.

Watching "Hell Night" (1981) right now. It's a cheap teeny horror flick from the 80s. It has Linda Blair in it, so apparently she couldn't get any good roles after The Exorcist 1 and 2.

Two male and two female pledges have to spend the night in a remote murder mansion to join the fraternity/sorority, and the frat boys/sorority girls want to mess with them.
>>
>>
>>221255544
Detention is amazing and still the most meta horror movie of all-time. There's also a Taiwan horror movie named Detention that is not only good, but teaches you history.
>>
>>221254339

Yes, I thing the whole end with the murderer not dying even after having taken a pitchfork and two shotgun shots to the chest seemed to me just to pad the running time. I also thought Linda Blair may have had fame from The Exorcist 1 and 2, but she wasn't really a good actress. I think I saw her in one other cheap horror film which I can't remember the title from, something with her riding a horse that spooks.

IMDb said she felt typecast as a horror film victim at the point and wanted to be taken seriously. So she did some nude photography (great choice) with the result that she was then only hired for sexploitation films. I think she eventually moved to television.

My general policy is to automatically block trannies on letterboxd on sight (I get a good number commenting on my reviews) but it's a little depressing because they usually have pretty good taste and like weird movies. It's tragic that there's an entire generation of cool weirdo nerds who were still too stupid to not fall for such an obvious and massive psyop.
