A movie exists only once. Then basta. Seeing it again for pleasure – OK, why not? But the idea of ‘re-evaluating’ a movie is a nonsense, a heresy, a horror. Ban this ‘re-evaluation’ business from your life. If the movie seems not so good the second or the third time around, then tell yourself that you are the one who's wrong.

>>221238685Post pictures.
>>221238130Re-evaluation isn't heresy because it changes your opinion. It's heresy when it turns genuine feeling into a technical exercise. A good melodrama gets better on rewatch because you understand the characters more deeply and notice the sincerity that escaped you the first time.

>>221234721>QOTDAll the time. The first time around I watch it normally, just allowing myself to have an honest emotional reaction. If I like it, I'll show it to my friends. Sometimes I'll watch a film analytically and study the technical aspects and pay close attention to the specifics of blocking/framing/lighting choices, camera movement, lens types etc. I treat watching my very favorite films as a special occasion so the movies I've seen the most times are for fun or waifu reasons.>QOTDerCat People, Ms .45, Grand Prix, License To Kill, the list goes on...>QOTDestAltered States, the first go around I did not vibe at all with the hippy dippy Boomerism of the first act so I quickly tuned out. I've unironically anwered to a few of those "well, what was the last film you've seen?" posts before, and never got any further replies. Probably because no one else had seen them or at least didn't have strong opinions on them.If you want a discussion, you have to pick a really popular film, and ideally offer a very controversial opinion on it. The only things I remember getting a discussion started in here within the last few weeks were unironically Citizen Kane and Vertigo. And even then it required a bit of added controversy. So, yeah ...

Is it a purposeful 'homage' that Saint Jack by Peter Bogdanovich is almost a thematical retelling of Cassavetes' The Killing of a Chinese Bookie but in a slightly different setting? Both films involve Ben Gazzara. They're also 2 years apart in release, something's really odd hereThen I've seen people say The Last Picture Show is greatly influenced by Hud by forgotten genius Martin Ritt. Is this Bogdanovich guy just a thief?
>>221252080It's based on a 1973 book. Maybe Bogdanovich saw some similarities and it could have influenced the casting of Ben Gazzara, but idk.Killing of A Chinese Bookie was conceived by Scorsese and Cassavetes together, I think there are similarities to Mean Street.
>>221252080The Last Picture Show and Hud are both based on novels written by the same guy. Don't be silly. The Bog is /ourguy/ for Targets alone.
Speaking of Bogdanovich, the director's cut of his last film (which was a victim to studio meddling) silently came out last year. Did anyone here watch it?
>>221252459Wasn't it a fucking Owen Wilson romcom? I don't know if more scenes can turn an Owen Wilson romcom into some artistic passion project.
>>221252459>>221252485Funnily enough, its title's a reference to Cluny Brown.
>>221252080>Is this Bogdanovich guy just a thief? All the New Hollywood guys were blatantly wearing their influences on their sleeves but I don't see what's wrong with thatIn any case, Targets and What's Up Doc (speaking of homages) are terrific films

There isn't too many films in that subgenre though, you explore it pretty fast
>>221252620>There isn't too many films in that subgenre thoughWell, there's this hidden, underground gem named The Godfather...All jokes aside, check out Millius' Dillinger biopic. And Pollack's The Yakuza (penned by P. Schrader).
>>221252640>Millius' Dillinger biopicwill check out>Pollack's The YakuzaI saw that one, it was alright but not really what I was describing. I mean the more rustic, slice of life take on the american crime film. Mean Streets, Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Mikey and Nicky, even Prince of the City even though it's a focus on the cops. But it doesn't really matter I guess
You can call me a pleb for this, but I think I'd be fully satisfied watching nothing but New Hollywood-era American films.Even the lesser ones I've seen like New York New York and The Missouri Breaks feel soulful and have great vibes.

Imagine preferring that stuck up ice queen twig Gr*ce K*lly to the warm, voluptuous, passionate sensuality of /ourgirl/ Ingrid. The lipmogging alone is outrageous.
>>221267961You forgot an important detail, Kelly couldn't act. To the point of nearly ruining a bunch of movies. Ms. Quarterback Shoulders absolutely destroys her on that factor alone.

I didn't even remember Contempt having a theme song until I heard the John Zorn coverhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCyqos_LI_U
>>221270344>I didn't even remember Contempt having a theme songReally? It's constantly playing over and over throughout the duration of the film. Big fan of that cover btw. Zorn underused Frith, he could really shred.
>>221270356Frisell*, Frith's the bassist on that album, my bad.

>Vigilante thriller. This is pretty much just a repurposed Rampage 4 script set in "Europe", starring Armie Hammer, with a slightly higher budget than the last outing, probably because it's starring Armie Hammer. Insanely gonzo blood effects, a car flipping over and then bursting into flames which Hammer deadpans is "because they were following the law", a SWAT officer's head exploding into a liter of blood and viscera or the controversial opening sequence of a woman getting her neck slit open and dumping corn syrup over the pavement-this is classic Uwe Boll in his microbudget era. Is this the kind of thing that could radicalize simpletons who take it seriously? Probably. Does that make it a half star movie? No, on a technical level this is Boll's best feature since Bloodrayne 1-say what you like about his ability to direct actors or recognise a good script, but Boll can run a set and put the money on the screen, so to speak. Hammer is garbage, as always, and this would have been better if Brendan Fletcher bought the schizoid intensity of Bill Williamson to bear on the material-Hammer just comes off as if he has a hemorrhoid and is a little annoyed by it. Overall, it's a superior and entertaining movie that shouldn't be taken too seriously and should invite viewers to go and watch the rest of the Rampage series. Boll finally breaks the 2 star ceiling!https://letterboxd.com/dingoatemybabi/film/citizen-vigilante/
