It unironically was 22. I was standing there with my friend, we were about to have our graduation photos taken. He told me, this is probably the best we'll ever look. The supposed best time of our lives had passed us by. It was only downhill from here. Older, slower, uglier, more decrepit. The disappointments only accumulate. It was over.
I was 17 my first semester of college when I realized it doesn't get better.

i think the "give up" was already a permanent part of the mix by the time I was like 11 or 12 but it didn't consciously set in until about age 23 yeah. im autistic and stupid and i can't really learn anything so i just want to live off welfare while i do drugs and masturbate and then when life gets so dreadful that i cant ignore it anymore then i can just use my intact gun rights to buy the ticket out of here. >>221240855When I was a teenager, although as an adult I'm finding that this is a self-defeating attitude that mostly develops when you do nothing but sit inside playing video games and shitposting. You're supposed to develop real hobbies and learn things, and go out and participate to some extent in your community (go to events, go where things are happening). Your brain seeks comfort and finds comfort in habits. Where you have control is over what habits you develop. Some lead to depression, others lead to a better overall wellbeing. Habits that lead to a sense of progress, like exercise or learning a skill, tend to improve peoples' mood and worldview, versus habits of stagnation like digital entertainment

The realization hit me all at once at 34 that I was about statistically halfway though this thing, and that’s ignoring random accidents or cancer diagnoses, and that I had essentially nothing to show for it. I went into a very dark place for about 5 years, not wanting to live, but too cowardly to die, and eventually just worked my way out of it, and started doing shit that I care about and trying to fix the little things about myself that I don’t like, cut out a lot of bad people, and was in a much better place by my 40th birthday.
