>Saving Private Ryan"Oh no war is hell!" proceeds to show a badass 30-minute D-Day sequence with epic sound design where Americans mow down krauts>Full Metal JacketLiterally spawned an entire generation of edgy teens quoting Ermey and putting "Born to Kill" on their airsoft helmets.>Apocalypse NowRide of the Valkyries helicopter raid. Used as an actual unironic hype song by the military. Wow, really convinced me war is bad Francis.>1917 / All Quiet on the Western FrontVideo game cutscenes and Netflix slop with cool cinematography that makes dying in the mud look like a Pinterest aesthetic moodboard. All of them fail. They all make combat look like an epic crucible of masculinity where you get to shoot big guns, bond with the boys, and have a cool hero's death. The Thin Red Line is the ONLY actual anti-war kino ever made. There are no badass one-liners. There is no cool drill sergeant. You don't get a neat little sniper duel where the good guy outsmarts the bad guy. It's just terrified, dirty men wandering aimlessly through tall grass while a schizo poetic voiceover questions the fundamental indifference of nature to human suffering. Nobody watches this and goes "wow I wanna sign up for the marines!" They watch it and want to lie down in a ditch, stare at a leaf, and cry about a dying bird.
It still heavily aestheticizes war though and makes it appear as a profound experience but thats kind of innate to war movies and to war itself. But I agree it's very different from something like Saving Private Ryan which is just a video game essentially.
>war is badThen err... don't join it?

>>221243920Then err, say you're a quaker?
Come and See is pretty anti war imo
>>221243845Malick captures the beauty of nature to contrast it with the absolute absurdity of men blowing each other up over a piece of dirt. It's not aestheticizing the war itself, it's aestheticizing the world that the war is intruding on.
Come and See is so much of an anti war film that it literally spawned the entire "WAR IS LE BAD" memeliterally everyone involved just gets fucked no matter the side

American military let's you use their equipment for filming as long as you portray them in a positive light. You literally can't make anti war movies or the production company will get blacklisted.Hollywood is american propaganda by design
