Probably the height of Mann's existential cinema, the man-woman and friendship scenes in Thief. Heat was good but not this good. Manhunter veered into lunacy and is probably Mann's best movie but Thief just had the vibe of slim hope that overwrought cinema he did after 1986 could not match. This type of shit is incredibly hard to do and it almost feels demeaning to compare it to music video. I think Peckinpah was kinda similar to Mann in how much could he capture with knowing when to cut simple idiosyncrasies.
