What's the best visual effect in movie history?
>>221246304Hmm, where have I seen this before..
>>221246405In America, obviously
Technically? I dunno. But I really liked that effect they did in Blade Runner Literally Me where the whore was mixing face with the AI. I thought it'd be simple but apparently, it wasn't. I liked all the effects in that movie desu
>>221246528Shut the fuck up. You are such an embarrassment to your family, holy shit. Kill yourself.

Helicopter scene in the first Matrix.
I like the scene in Once upon a time in Hollywood where Cliff is driving along 1969 Sunset Blvd at night and I assume they digitally replaced all the modern stuff with period accurate bars and vehicles etc.
>>221246528>I thought it'd be simple but apparently, it wasn't.Wasnt it just a composite?

The way the T 1000 fights at the forge in Judgment Day. Most effects sit entirely separately from the actual movie and could have turned out any of a hundred ways without affecting anything. The way Cameron was smart enough to tell the story visually, that a creature that was just a blob would naturally have no concern for what was a limb or not, and would instead just fight with whatever was computed as having the most leverage? Could not have been dreamed up by anyone not on his level, full stop. You don't need a single word about positronic fighting samplers or whatever. It just immediately makes intuitive sense and immediately informs you of why it's invincible in melee combat
For me it's the scramble suit in A Scanner Darkly
>>221247139>a creature that was just a blob would naturally have no concern for what was a limb or not, and would instead just fight with whatever was computed as having the most leverageNow that I think of it, it's kind of weird that it bothers maintaining a humanoid shape when it's not trying to pose as a human.I think in a non-visual medium you could even more creative with what such a machine could and would do.
The panoramic tracking shot of Barad-dûr
>>221247200I guess I should say in a medium not requiring live actors because you could do stuff like what I'm thinking of with animation.

>>221249873That always bothered me since once he touches someone he can duplicate them so should of had a scene where the top third is john then it shows the rest as a deformed blob hiding or something.Love t2
>>221246304I thought Michael Douglas's de-aging in Ant-Man was pretty great.

1. Jurassic Park T-Rex escape scene2. Davey Jones
>>221254036It was Stanley Kubrick's final movie. Kubrick lived in the UK since the 1960s and refused to leave the country to film any of his projects, so all his movies after Lolita were filmed in the UK. But Eyes Wide Shut was set in NYC, so they had full New York street sets built and for that shot of Cruise walking where you can see into the distance they had him walking on a treadmill in front of projected filmed footage from NYC.
>>221249296Why hasn't anyone attempted this trick since?
>>221254283I feel like the T-Rex escape won't ever be topped. The VFX blend so perfectly with the animatronic SFX. On top of that it's just a killer sequence from just about every filmmaking standpoint you can think of.
>>221246304Not exactly movie but the first thing that comes to mind is the black and white face morphingoutisde digital effects as simple as it ultimately is the star wars opening crawl was pretty impressive for being done without computers
>>221246304Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas have a number of VFX shots that can be considered the best, just for how they set the standard for movies going forward. The first appearance of Jaws, the cgi in Jurassic Park, the use of all digital filming and set design in The Phantom Menace.
>>221249296holy shit is that real?!?!?!
>>221254427>outisde digital effects as simple as it ultimately is the star wars opening crawl was pretty impressive for being done without computersnigga you know that Lucas copied that from Flash Gordon serials from like 30 years before Star Wars?

>>221246304Hard to say. Some of the visual masters, Cameron, Scott, Spielberg, Kubrick, Lucas, Jackson have been mentioned already. Classic guys like Lang, Keaton, Lloyd, Fleming, Eisenstein, Hitchcock deserves some credit even though they the technique available was limited in comparison . Effects cost money too, can't forget that, guys like Bergman (Fanny & Alexander), Argento (Suspiria taxi scene) and Tarkovsky (Solaris) produced some visually impressive images on a smaller budget.
the pressure wave being visually displayed literally blew my mind when I saw ithttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDd3yWEiNLYmy best pal thought the door moving towards the camera in the explosive fire was better but imo it didn't look that great at the time and has aged even poorerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EocwWnIVouo

>>221256643Looks a bit dated now but I remember really blown away at the time, really impressive
>>221254485Shit opinion, what made Jaws so good was the lack of a dumb looking mechanical shark, we get a few glimpses out of the water towards the end and that's it. This is what would later inform Spielberg's decision to use CG shots sparingly in Jurassic Park, which made that movie great too. The Phantom Menace taught filmmakers how NOT to do VFX. I can't think of a single kino that used the all-greenscreen-all-the-time method like George did. Great movies with lots of CGI always use a lot of practical stuff too.

Bullet Time in The Matrix, the CGI in Iron Man 1 or Pirates of the Caribbean 2, specifically Davy Jones. Can't remember if it's in Contact? The scen with the little girl running up the stairs and down the hall and she opens a door as all one fluid motion and you never see a camera track or rig. Turns out it was a series of mirrors and it was extremely clever. Also the stairway fight in Ong Bak or the hallway fight in Daredevil season 1 as a homage to Old Boy. Both were long, single takes and that's impressive.
