This is a big reason why used recorded tapes you find second-hand are usually movies with the commercials and bumpers cut out.
Sometimes you'll find families who recorded their kids graduation or birthdays, but there's a staggering amount of recorded movies from HBO or Cinemax with exact time durations if they had multiple recordings on them.
Why buy a movie for that price when you were paying for cable to begin with.
I'm not an 80s kid but I'm still surprised that Laserdisc didn't become *the* rental format for movies while VHS/Beta would be intended for home recordings.
It was just as expensive to have a VCR at the time. Having an LD player and renting the movies would've been less annoying to deal with when it came to worn out tape and deterioration due to subsequent forward and rewinds and constant playback.

We'd all gather around the TV and watch that VHS though. Now it's just depression streaming for the lonely

I have a lot of warm fuzzy feelings and nostalgia over owning VHS movies as a kid, looking at them on catalogs, waiting for them to come to video after seeing them in theater

I didn't get that at all with DVDs, I'm not really sure why. Except for the first x-men movie on dvd, that was like the first DVD I ever owned, that was nostalgic as fuck.

I think it's mostly just because movies aren't the same as they used to be

I had a Godzilla VHS tape set and rhe spines spelled out Godzilla.
The Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla cover had nothing to do with the movie itself, had characters from G vs M 2 on it.
Then one day my VHS player ate the tape, RIP.
Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>221247595
Yeah because that was the format at the time for televisions

Famous/recent films. But that's also what led to the development of the notorious VHS bargain bin, and the explosion of lower-end studios to serve the bins. And it was very profitable for a while.
>>
>>221247711
$89.95 I still remember the tag on the rental case.
>>
The craziest thing where the small screens we used to have. I spent my entire childhood looking at 15'' monitors and tiny ass tvs. Mind boggling.
