M3gan 2.0 wasn't even a bad movie.
The first film was horror-slop that turned out to have an artistic vein through the entire thing. Once word got out that it was better than expected it did better than expected. We have this strange situation with the algorithm where films that would previously have become a cult classic years later will instead get their niche audience very quickly. The second film was a real effort to make science fiction with the same characters, it was even better than the first one but it wasn't much more of what people liked about the first one (except for le quip robot getting in more bazinga's). And now it was being compared to other 'serious' science fiction, as well as to the generic sci-fi slop, and it wasn't exactly either of those things. It was serious science fiction underneath a lot of fun sequel tropes and using a lot of the filmic language of sci-fi slop. So it got caught in the middle, serious people weren't happy about how much fun the creators were having, and slop-munchers didn't like the science fiction so much. That's how the industry works, sadly.
M3GAN films are both great. I hope the second one does well on streaming and blu-ray and they make a third, even if it's low budget.
