Been on a big western kick lately. They're my favorite genreWhat are your favorite westerns? American vs Spaghetti? Who wins?
I LOVE THING!I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT THING!
>>221258285The original 3:10 to Yuma. Glenn Ford's best performance and Van Heflin is great opposite him. Excellent film.
>>221258357i watched the remake several years ago. i don't remember a thing since it's been so long except ben foster overacting the entire time
>>221258377Modern remakes... not even once
I still think about The Gunfighter.
john wayne is over rated
Cause I'm the High high highPlainssssssssDrifter drifter drifter
>>221258631Overrated by who?
>>221258285>Westerns>Not a single image of Django (not the nigger)>Not a single image of Trinity >Not a single image of Loco>Not a single image of SartanaFake western fan.
>>221258480BASED. It's a masterpiece.
Bone Tomahawk
>>221258978by those who say he's good
I highly recommend The Mercenary (1968). The entire thing's on YT.
>>221258285Spaghetti westerns are much better, though I haven't seen many American ones
>>221258285Recently watched Quigley Down Under. Basically a traditional Western but with Australia instead of the US and Aboriginals instead of Indians
I watched open range yesterday. Good movie.
>>221258285The Great Silence is the most depressing western you'll ever watch, that ending still haunts me
>>221258285For us its the upcoming Western film Flint, starring the Canadian actress Sarah Gadon
I ended up liking Hang'em High a lot more than I thought I would. I was expecting a typical American Clint-is-a-badass flick and got a story about vigilante justice and capital punishment.
All the best westerns were made after the 90's.
>>221259290pretty decent, but the last fight is a bit silly. they build up that merc as a really dangerous dude, and then he gets one-shot before the action even starts
>>221259400This but the exact opposite.
Not my favorite by any means.Purgatory is pretty good for modern shit.Other than that, the classics.Mainly all Clint Eastwood and Glenn Ford.Charles Bronson has a few.Tom Selleck surprisingly has decent shit.
For the discerning fan. Great cast, well paced, sticks the landing.
The Wild Bunch, co-starring Mermaid Man.
Leone > All
>>221258996It's just a random pic I got off Google, chill
>>221259260I recently watched The Searchers and Butch Cassidy Neither were as good as TGTBTU or OUATITWSpaghetti > American
>>221259963All except John Ford.
>>221259332it's gonnna be so bad
Tom Horn is pretty good.
>>221260020Nope
>>221260117You don't get to just say "nope". Even Leone himself would agree Ford was the king of the west.
>>221258285Quick and The Dead is so much fun bros. It's a borderline parody of Leone westerns but still kinda works as a serious movie? Great cast too, Sharon stone is hot and also genuinely believable as a badass gunfighter, it has Leonardo DiCaprio and Gene Hackman.Idk why people love to suck Sam Raimi's dick so hard but then completely ignore this movie
>>221258285italian movies are not westerns.
>>221260167Yeah but now that both are long dead, Ford aged into boomerslop while Leone aged like fine wine. It's just how it is anon
>>221258285If you asked any millennial or a zoomerHe will tell you the greatest western film is red dead redemption Lol
>>221260264People overrate RDR(2) but it's still really good, especially for a vidya narrative. I guess people just don't realise how much of it is homages and references and straight up whole plot threads thay have been ripped from old movies. There's even a character in Josey Wales that was copy pasted 1:1 into RDR1
>>221260147outfit way too clean and new to look good in a western
>>221260167nope
>>221260243why? why does country of origin matter?
>>221260264>>221260485RDR2 is basically Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid retoldInstead of "we need to escape to Bolivia" it's "we need to escape to Tahiti"But the themes of a "wild" west rapidly becoming less wild while running from the pinkertons is basically straight from Butch Cassidy
>>221260233she's hot enough i might actually check it out
>>221258285If you haven't seen Treasure of the Sierra Madre, you should. Watched it with my dad on TV many years ago and still remember how good it was
>>221261032i see this mentioned a lot i think i'll give it a watch tonight
>>221261032Wish Humphrey Bogart did more westerns in his time.
>>221261137why would anyone watch ugly girls on purpose?
>>221258285Watch The Shooting if you haven't already. Masterful.
>>221261243there's a reason they never bothered showing this in the us
Westerns as American Mythology: ShaneWesterns as History: Once Upon a Time in the WestWesterns but not really: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
>>221261469>Westerns as History: Once Upon a Time in the Westexplain
>>221261549Disregard. I meant How the West was Won
Perfect timing.I just got into the genre myself after re-reading "Preacher" (/co/, heavily inspired by the genre).I've seen, so far, "True Grit" (I finally understand the fuss about John Wayne) and "Unforgiven", which should I watch next?I liked both of them a lot.
>>221261641honestly anything after unforgiven will be a downgrade. it's the GOATbut now watch anything of the dollars films (for a few dollars more is the best) or once upon a time in the west and see how they compare to the american films and see which ones you like most
>>221261641If you liked those Westerns about old guys living with the consequences of their gunfightin' days check out Man of the West and The Gunfighter. >I finally understand the fuss about John WayneRed River will get you going even more.
>>221258377yeah, I didn't care for the remake either, maybe I need to see the original
>>221261641The final shootout in Unforgiven draws from another minor one in The Outlaw Josey Wales
>>221262132>The Outlaw Josey Walesmy favorite western, and the bluray looks so good
next post is the next western i watch
One I watched recently and thought was awesome is White Comanche. I don't know if it's known in Star Trek circles as a young William Shatner is the star, where he plays both half breed twins; one brother ripping peyote and going on the war path with his old tribe and the other trying to lead a life without everyone thinking he's his crazy Indian Chief brother. Quality spaghetti and seems to be underrated.
>>221260264RDR 1 is good.2 on the other hand...>>221260485>>221260614It's also a poor ripoff of the Great Silence.
>>221259963>>221260020Ford > Hawks > Leone > Peckinpah but all are great.
>>221262873>>221262880okay watching white comanche tonight
The Eastwood shilling has gotten out of hand, Unforgiven is literally a Western for redditors. Josey Wales is the only film he directed I consider half decent. You don't deserve to talk about Westerns until you've seen all on this chart.
>>221264016what a shit list
>>221264016>The New LandNever heard of this. Seems kino.
watched this yesterday, enjoyed it. it's clearly 90s/modern - just the way it's filmed and put together, not 'strong female character' (that aspect is honestly done well).something ironic about that i can't explain - westerns by their nature are timeless, but this doesn't feel like a rough, lived-in town, it feels like a film set.but it's a very simple self-contained story, cool idea, done well. recommend if you just want a 'mid' film to kill an afternoon.
>>221258285Comedy Westerns are underrated. Trinity films are pure kino.>>221264016>t. John WayneInto the trash you go.
>>221264090>John Wayne>into the trashThat'll be the day.
>>221258285
I recently found out that the actor who played Newly on Gunsmoke is in Yellowstone. Should I watch the neo-western boomerslop?
Is Tombstone really good or really bad? Seems everyone either loved it and considers it one of their favorites, or they absolutely hated it
>>221264232Both. The parts that are good are kino but the bad parts are really bad. Great characters and dialogue, terrible romantic subplot, and rushed montage of the vendetta ride.
>>221264292that makes more sense
You guys watching Deadwood?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbdDlTDPE28
>>221264232the only truly bad part is the romance between kurt and the bitch. everything else is kino of the highest magnitude.
>>221265169i’ve been on the fence about this show for years cocksucker.
>>221260485>People overrate RDR(2) but it's still really goodWoke trash that tells the story of a gypsy commune in an alternate American West where animal abuse is a crime.
>>221262381>I had to come back.>I know.
>>221261215who goes to work dressed like that idiot on the left?
>>221261137Ah yes, old West women with tons of Botox
>>221259344Do you oppose those like a Redditor?
>>221259597Silver rings!
>>221266002huh?
I found the great silence to be a let down, it was not bad by any means but i expected much more given the reputation, the ending was great
>>221266724i feel the same way. after it ended i thought to myself "that's it? that's what everyone obsesses over?"i think it's because they desperately want to give the spaghetti genre more credibility by forcing that other directors besides leone made good spaghetti westerns
The Dark Valley is my favorite foreign western.
>>221258356Fpbp Op sucks
>>221258285Pic related is my favourite western. It has Burt Lancaster (greatest actor of all time imo), Gary Cooper, Charles Bronson and Ernest Borgnine. It was shot on location in Mexico and the Mexican government was so pissed off about how the country was portrayed that they stopped allowing American directors to shoot in Mexico for more than a decade afterwards.
>>221264016Kino list. I saw the ox-bow incident recently and it was surprisingly great.
>>221258285Spaghetti Westerns are overrated because there's a handful of really good ones that everyone knows. American Westerns are much more varied and there's plenty of hidden gems to be found.
>>221261114He was in one of the best Westerns ever made. Quality over quantity.
>>221265278Rockstar knew its audience. Modern life is isolated. Most people don’t really have a community anymore. The camp gives them what’s missing — a place to belong.
Rango is the most Faustian movie ever made. The most relevant to our time. It’s themes of modernity, identity, boomers, encounters with heroic legends both in story and in the external world, every scene is picturesque. It is the best movie for anyone living from 1990 to 2100.Maybe the best movie for anyone living post 1918.It is, I think unintentionally, an extremely enlightened film on Spengler’s analysis of Western Man and where Modern Western Man is at post WWI.
>>221266786I love spaghetti western, i think by using leone as a metric you are setting yourself up to fail. Try the mercenary, my name is nobody, they called him trinity
Anthony Mann and Bud Boetticher are babby's first toe in the deep end. Too much spaghettislop in here.
This was the biggest waste of potential that I've ever seen. How can you have 3 extremely kino actors and make such a mid film out of it?
here you go OPhttps://archive.4plebs.org/tv/thread/213420280/
>>221266724Just goes to show again that Spaghetti Westerns are overrated.
>>221269074They're called spaghetti westerns because they're directed by italians. Has nothing to so with the actual quality.
Reminder most cowboys were mexican and black and looked down upon at the timethen hollywood stole it and attributed stolen valor to white boys
>>221258285what are some river westerns? is missouri west enough to be western?
>>221269133I know what it means you dumb nigger. They're overrated because for most people the only Spaghetti Westerns they've seen are by Sergio Leone. Once you see other highly rated Spaghetti Westerns you realise that they're far inferior to American Westerns.
>>221269183>Reminder most cowboys were mexican and blackAnd Jewish. Big guys, who were great shots and spent money freely
>>221269183WE WUZ KOWBOYZ N SHIT
>>221268707>Anthony Mann and Bud Boetticher are babby's first toe in the deep end.Still far better than 80% of other Western directors though.
>>221266724
>>221258357>Van HeflinBased.
>>221258480>>221259004Fact.Here's another Henry King / Gregory Peck kino.
>>221259963Laughable take from a capeshitter.Go post in the star wars threads, virgin.
>>221261243Just don't try to hear it.
>>221264016Meh.Spaghettishit is nothing but trash and Pat Garret is Peckinpah's worst by a mile.
>>221264205You should watch the Gunsmoke where he plays a bad guy, absolute kino.
>>221264232Childish trash, much, much closer to the worst western ever made than the best.
>>221268790Watch the one where Charlie and that chink are stuck on an island, it's kino.
>>221260233Sharon Stone fought hard to get Leo in the movie that she ended up paying his salary out of her own pocket. I wonder if they were fucking on the dl.
>>221258631Honestly he's underrated.
>>221258631Boompinion (boomer opinion)
>>221268790The Stranger and the Gunfighter does that East meets West thing much better. Has Lee Van Cleef in it.
>>221266482silver rings your butt!!
>>221272465Thanks for the rec, I'll check it out
Who makes good cowboy boots still?
>>221268395The Johnny Depp cartoon?
>>221269183Retard alert
>>221258357SPBP>>221259516I prefer the other Mann/Stewart westerns tbqhdesu
>>221270539Americans are so insecure about their westerns, their national films, being outclassed by Italians
>>221259260>Spaghetti westerns are much better>though I haven't seen many American onesKEK based retard
I've seen a bunch of 1930s-1950s American Westerns and I enjoy Italian ones more. Both The Searchers and Rio Bravo disappointed me, but I enjoyed a lot Red River, My Darling Clementine, Stagecoach and High Noon. What bothers me the most is probably all this out of place humor in some American Westerns. It doesn't feel natural compared to the Italian ones. I couldn't stand that geezer Stumpy in Rio Bravo. The movie also lacked good villains (which is often a problem in these old Westerns).
>>221274550The acting in those old films was so cheesy and lame
>>221274550Watch this one >>221267296It has a great sense of humor.
>>221258285Lonesome Dove is a great miniseries
>>221274747How many episodes?
>>221259237Companeros! is good too. It's got that right amount of crazy I look for in a pisgetti western.>>221269268Rooster CogburnRiver Of No Return
You gotta watch Faccia a faccia (1967)
>>221277383Gian Maria Volonte is so good in everything he's in
>>221261641dollars trilogy (fistful of dollars, for a few dollars more, the good the bad and the ugly). free on youtube. fistful of dollars is mid and skippable or you can watch it last.and my personal is once upon a time in the west, which is at times a slow and confusing movie
>>221264016I've seen enough of that chart to say with certainty that you have bad taste
>>221278624>fistful of dollars is mid and skippable or you can watch it lasti prefer django. django is basically the exact same film but more gritty and violent and both are just western remakes of yojimbo
>>221269183most westerns aren't about cowboys, they are about gunslingers
>>221278821The person you're replying to has never seen a western before
>>221258285I don't see it mentioned much but I really like Forsaken. Keifer Sutherland's cokehead behavior is a natural fit for an autistic and washed up yet still dangerous gunman, Donald Sutherland and Brian Cox add that Cool Old Guy factor but my personal favorite is Michael Wincott as an honorable villain type. It's solid. I wonder how many other people have even seen it.
Fort Apache is my favorite western, but I'll take any western directed by John Ford, Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh, Delmer Daves or Anthony Mann.
>>221258285American has way more subgenres. Noir= Pursued. Gay=Red River. Moralizing= Ox bow incident. B-movie perfection = Day of the outlaw. Thrillers= too many examples. But OUAITW really outsold.
>>221279563It's the greatest Ford western to me. In a different thread an Anon commented on how it mixes Epic narrative with slice-of-life scenes. I think that's a big part of its charm.Do you like the Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott westerns?
>>221280241Yes I have the Rudolph Scott Blu-ray set with like 12 of his westerns on it. Very cozy stuff, great for a Sunday afternoon. Also really love the Errol Flynn westerns
>>221278793just watched django for the first time after seeing django unchained a million times, its so peak even though its italian. i really we feel like we need more melodramatic cowboys w coffins which is why i can see why they made like a billion spin offs. i do think that unchained captured the love of drama and theatre that OG django had and i didn't appreciate that until i saw it.man i really hope westerns make a comeback
>>221270444Check out Apache Drums by the same director.
