Been on a big western kick lately. They're my favorite genre
What are your favorite westerns?
American vs Spaghetti? Who wins?
>>
I LOVE THING!
I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT THING!
>>
>>221258285
The original 3:10 to Yuma. Glenn Ford's best performance and Van Heflin is great opposite him. Excellent film.
>>
>>221258357
i watched the remake several years ago. i don't remember a thing since it's been so long except ben foster overacting the entire time
>>
>>221258377
Modern remakes... not even once
>>
I still think about The Gunfighter.
>>
john wayne is over rated

BASED. It's a masterpiece.
>>
Bone Tomahawk
>>
>>221258978
by those who say he's good
>>
I highly recommend The Mercenary (1968). The entire thing's on YT.
>>
>>221258285
Spaghetti westerns are much better, though I haven't seen many American ones
>>
>>221258285
Recently watched Quigley Down Under. Basically a traditional Western but with Australia instead of the US and Aboriginals instead of Indians
>>
I watched open range yesterday. Good movie.
>>
>>221258285
The Great Silence is the most depressing western you'll ever watch, that ending still haunts me
>>
>>221258285
For us its the upcoming Western film Flint, starring the Canadian actress Sarah Gadon
>>
I ended up liking Hang'em High a lot more than I thought I would. I was expecting a typical American Clint-is-a-badass flick and got a story about vigilante justice and capital punishment.
>>
All the best westerns were made after the 90's.
>>
>>221259290
pretty decent, but the last fight is a bit silly. they build up that merc as a really dangerous dude, and then he gets one-shot before the action even starts
>>
>>221259400
This but the exact opposite.
>>
Not my favorite by any means.
Purgatory is pretty good for modern shit.
Other than that, the classics.
Mainly all Clint Eastwood and Glenn Ford.
Charles Bronson has a few.
Tom Selleck surprisingly has decent shit.

I recently watched The Searchers and Butch Cassidy
Neither were as good as TGTBTU or OUATITW
Spaghetti > American
>>

All except John Ford.
>>
>>221259332

>>
Tom Horn is pretty good.
>>
>>221260020
Nope
>>
>>221260117
You don't get to just say "nope". Even Leone himself would agree Ford was the king of the west.
>>
>>221258285
Quick and The Dead is so much fun bros. It's a borderline parody of Leone westerns but still kinda works as a serious movie? Great cast too, Sharon stone is hot and also genuinely believable as a badass gunfighter, it has Leonardo DiCaprio and Gene Hackman.

Idk why people love to suck Sam Raimi's dick so hard but then completely ignore this movie
>>
>>221258285
italian movies are not westerns.
>>
>>221260167
Yeah but now that both are long dead, Ford aged into boomerslop while Leone aged like fine wine. It's just how it is anon
>>
>>221258285
If you asked any millennial or a zoomer
He will tell you the greatest western film is red dead redemption
Lol
>>
>>221260264
People overrate RDR(2) but it's still really good, especially for a vidya narrative. I guess people just don't realise how much of it is homages and references and straight up whole plot threads thay have been ripped from old movies. There's even a character in Josey Wales that was copy pasted 1:1 into RDR1
>>
>>221260147
outfit way too clean and new to look good in a western
>>
>>221260167
nope
>>
>>221260243
why? why does country of origin matter?
>>
>>221260264
>>221260485
RDR2 is basically Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid retold
Instead of "we need to escape to Bolivia" it's "we need to escape to Tahiti"
But the themes of a "wild" west rapidly becoming less wild while running from the pinkertons is basically straight from Butch Cassidy
>>
>>221260233
she's hot enough i might actually check it out

Perfect timing.
I just got into the genre myself after re-reading "Preacher" (/co/, heavily inspired by the genre).
I've seen, so far, "True Grit" (I finally understand the fuss about John Wayne) and "Unforgiven", which should I watch next?
I liked both of them a lot.
>>
>>221261641
honestly anything after unforgiven will be a downgrade. it's the GOAT
but now watch anything of the dollars films (for a few dollars more is the best) or once upon a time in the west and see how they compare to the american films and see which ones you like most
>>
>>221261641
If you liked those Westerns about old guys living with the consequences of their gunfightin' days check out Man of the West and The Gunfighter.
>I finally understand the fuss about John Wayne
Red River will get you going even more.
>>
>>221258377
yeah, I didn't care for the remake either, maybe I need to see the original

One I watched recently and thought was awesome is White Comanche.
I don't know if it's known in Star Trek circles as a young William Shatner is the star, where he plays both half breed twins; one brother ripping peyote and going on the war path with his old tribe and the other trying to lead a life without everyone thinking he's his crazy Indian Chief brother. Quality spaghetti and seems to be underrated.

RDR 1 is good.
2 on the other hand...

The Eastwood shilling has gotten out of hand, Unforgiven is literally a Western for redditors. Josey Wales is the only film he directed I consider half decent. You don't deserve to talk about Westerns until you've seen all on this chart.

watched this yesterday, enjoyed it. it's clearly 90s/modern - just the way it's filmed and put together, not 'strong female character' (that aspect is honestly done well).

something ironic about that i can't explain - westerns by their nature are timeless, but this doesn't feel like a rough, lived-in town, it feels like a film set.

but it's a very simple self-contained story, cool idea, done well. recommend if you just want a 'mid' film to kill an afternoon.

Both. The parts that are good are kino but the bad parts are really bad. Great characters and dialogue, terrible romantic subplot, and rushed montage of the vendetta ride.

Pic related is my favourite western. It has Burt Lancaster (greatest actor of all time imo), Gary Cooper, Charles Bronson and Ernest Borgnine. It was shot on location in Mexico and the Mexican government was so pissed off about how the country was portrayed that they stopped allowing American directors to shoot in Mexico for more than a decade afterwards.

Spaghetti Westerns are overrated because there's a handful of really good ones that everyone knows. American Westerns are much more varied and there's plenty of hidden gems to be found.

Rockstar knew its audience. Modern life is isolated. Most people don’t really have a community anymore. The camp gives them what’s missing — a place to belong.
>>
Rango is the most Faustian movie ever made. The most relevant to our time.
It’s themes of modernity, identity, boomers, encounters with heroic legends both in story and in the external world, every scene is picturesque.

It is the best movie for anyone living from 1990 to 2100.
Maybe the best movie for anyone living post 1918.
It is, I think unintentionally, an extremely enlightened film on Spengler’s analysis of Western Man and where Modern Western Man is at post WWI.
>>
>>221266786
I love spaghetti western, i think by using leone as a metric you are setting yourself up to fail. Try the mercenary, my name is nobody, they called him trinity

I've seen a bunch of 1930s-1950s American Westerns and I enjoy Italian ones more.
Both The Searchers and Rio Bravo disappointed me, but I enjoyed a lot Red River, My Darling Clementine, Stagecoach and High Noon.

What bothers me the most is probably all this out of place humor in some American Westerns. It doesn't feel natural compared to the Italian ones. I couldn't stand that geezer Stumpy in Rio Bravo. The movie also lacked good villains (which is often a problem in these old Westerns).

Keifer Sutherland's cokehead behavior is a natural fit for an autistic and washed up yet still dangerous gunman, Donald Sutherland and Brian Cox add that Cool Old Guy factor but my personal favorite is Michael Wincott as an honorable villain type. It's solid. I wonder how many other people have even seen it.

just watched django for the first time after seeing django unchained a million times, its so peak even though its italian. i really we feel like we need more melodramatic cowboys w coffins which is why i can see why they made like a billion spin offs. i do think that unchained captured the love of drama and theatre that OG django had and i didn't appreciate that until i saw it.

man i really hope westerns make a comeback
