Will we ever see another year like 1939 again?
>>
>>221264000
cinema truly peaked in the 30s and 40s. people here would say otherwise because they haven't watched a single film made prior to 1975
>>
1939? Reminds me of that tragedy.
>>
>>221264339
I would have to agree with you

This is true, and the irony is the new hollywood lovers favorite directors agree with you.
>>
There were much better years since then.

Sure, pretty good even if I don't care that much about Hollywood slop.

Here's in my opinion a better year:

1957:
12 Angry Men - overrated slop, but people seem to love it
Seventh Seal - great
Paths of Glory - great
Wild Strawberries - great
Throne of Blood - great
Witness for the Prosecution - good
Nights of Cabiria - great
Bridge on the River Kwai - great
The Cranes are Flying - great
Sweet Smell of Success - good
A Face in the Crowd - good
Tokyo Twilight - great
>>
>>221265679
Outside the Bergmans and River Kwai the rest are 7/10 at best
>>
>>221265535
Chrysanthemum - great
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - good
Only Angels Have Wings - great
Rules of the Game - good (I didn't love it as much as I expected)
The Roaring Twenties - good
Stagecoach - great
Ninotchka - good (not my favorite Lubitsch)
Midnight - meh
Wizard of Oz - ok
Young Mr Lincoln - good
Le Jour se leve - great
Gone with the Wind - meh

>Gone with the Wind - meh
Your opinion on movies doesn't amount to a hill of beans
>>

How is Sweet Smell of Success 7 at best?
>>
>>221266602
It's goated anon is smoking crack

The only exception is Sirk and Huston came of age much later, and they matter. If you like crime thrillers, Jean Pierre Melville and 60s guys like Henri Vernueil count. Costa-Gavras even later, he's the one SKorean guys can't surpass.

I remember my mom and grandma talking about the abuse Judy garland went through when I was a kid. It's crazy how long that was just an open secret that everyone just knew and accepted.
>>
>>221266602
Ok fine thats an 8.

Hollywood is full of demons. Look at what went on with Charlie Sheen.. literally raped a boy in front of people EVERYONE knows it multiple people have called him him BY NAME and he's still seen as a popular figure some even praise him for coming out bisexual
>>
>>221264000
Yes, the second coming of mustache man is upon us
>>
>>221266474
Sorry, it's a slog. I don't even care about the racism. It has some beautiful shots, but outside of that it's pretty boring. Especially the second part.
Most of the time Hollywood storytelling and glamour just don't work on me. It feels fake.
