Just within the past year or so I went down this rabbithole of the "Royal Bloodline" of England.For most of my life I'd always figured it was one huge fucking family, probably branched out to cousins or second cousins or other obscure relatives at some point, but all related.Turns out no, there were some points in the blood line that just fucking died out because of disease or murder or having no kids, so the royal lineage had to get passed down to strangers who were sort of vaguely related by marriage, or someone related to someone else who'd been married in the royal family a generation before.Nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't expecting it to be so fucking messy. The Norman conquest was a good thing and I’m tired of pretending it wasn’t. The Godwinsons were low-IQ psychopaths who aligned themselves with whoever would give them the most power and land - most of the old English houses deserved to be deposed. The concept of a unified England was so recent that if not for the conquest I’m certain there would’ve imploded at the first chance it got, especially given how vague inference laws were. And if not for the Hundred Years War - a direct consequence of the Conquest - we likely wouldn’t have ever left our miserable little island and put the World under a British boot. The worst thing about the conquest was that a bunch of rebellious Danes in Yorkshire got btfo’ed, something the English had been trying to do for decades by this point anyway.

Anglo-Saxon England may not have been a utopia, but it's incredible how the Normans basically overnight turned a place whose population was primarily made of free men with the right to bear arms and social mobility, into a rigid racial caste system where the bulk of the population was little more than slaves.
