Holy shit, what an edgelord.

Is that really all you have to say? You're kind of proving him right.

He has a point in that we're self aware and we understand how completely meaningless we are compared to the size of the universe, but we can do absolutely nothing about it. It's like bacteria becoming conscious at some point.
>>
>>221266415
But why should we die out? Nothing matters so staying alive doing nothing and being dead is pretty much the same. Let people have raw sex and shit spawns out of their genitals.
>>
we have so much capacity to feel joy and pleasure and make others feel it, we could turn this planet into actual heaven, but instead i feel like we're just cattle being preyed upon by the various psychopaths and sociopaths who live among us and rise to top positions.

we'll destroy the planet that lives in equilibrium without us

desu aside from that i see most of his points are right so it's irrelevant anyway
>>
>>221266415
By the end he realizes pessimism is just as bullshit as optimism is. Really, they're both forms of disillusionment, because both involve denial of either the inherent horror of life or the inherent beauty of it, rather than acceptance of what things are as a whole.

The world is a majestic, breathtaking place. Its also a Godless rock where any given predatory animal will brutally maim, kill, and eat another baby animal alive while it thrashes, so it is what it is.

how the fuck was this season so good and then it immediately goes to absolute shit?

you are right but i kinda don't find the beautiful parts of life anymore, maybe it's just me rather than a logical standpoint

by absolute shit do you mean the finale of season one or do you mean season two?

cause a mass extinction even that takes thousands of years to recover from? probably
destroy the planet though? not bloody likely. life & evolution will go on with or without us
although i would prefer to keep around the current biosphere for as long as possible because this one has cats : 3

just because other things are big doesn't mean you can't be big
>>
>>221267247
>>221267308
Because it's so big that statistically it's almost certain there are much bigger and more sophisticated civilizations somewhere out there, diminishing our own importance. And even if there aren't, the thought that we could blow up our entire planet and it would be absolutely irrelevant on a grand scale is humbling. The point is that we were given too much consciousness for our own good, like those snakes that have 1000x more potent venom than they actually need because evolution rolled the dice and it was good enough

This is the small reddit brain view. Civilization is a purely human concept. Other life forms don't necessarily need to be 6'0 bipedals made of protein who organize into a structure you could ever possibly categorize.
> we could blow up our entire planet and it would be absolutely irrelevant on a grand scale
You only experience what's immediately around you. Everything else is just conjured in your head, you don't actually experience it. Concerning yourself with abstract shit over living your actual life is some kind of mental illness.
>>
>>221267039
Who cares, the sun will eat the earth anyways and by the time it happens it'll be already dead for a bunch of other reasons. Rust gave value to stuff that had none. He was a crybaby.
>>
>>221267404
I can live my actual life and still spare a thought about the bigger picture once in a while. I'm not doomsaying like Rust is, I just think about it sometimes.
>>
>>221267450
youre saying its all pointless but it's not, just humans being retards and squandering our opportunities is the issue
the ball was dropped
>>
i think some people here never think about the bigger picture and you'll realize it's actually depressing, you get born, you be a wage slave until you die, that's what you will be doing for the most of your life and you have only that chance, also when a loved one die you know you will never meet them again i just don't know how i cannot think about that and just "live my life".

If every human on the world gets notified that humanity, as in all of human biomass, were to somehow cease function and existence at the end of an immediate time period (say, after one year or less), would humans just accept the end in silence, or would try to settle ancient petty feuds and might as well go out with a nuclear bang?
>>
Things suffer as a baseline and must struggle for survival. By creating new things you are signing them up to struggle without their consent which is unethical. The simplest way to eliminate suffering is to stop producing things that suffer. Things that are currently alive do not need to be sad themselves to agree to not produce more life. Rust was shooting at your fat whore of a mother.
This is the basic anti-natalist position, which I don't entirely agree with, but I'm putting it here before the threads get retarded and sidetracked.
>>
>>221267343
but how does that affect your ability to live other than overthinking?
>>
>>221267523
Some people don't even make it to the wageslave shit. I work in a children's oncology ward at a hospital and it's really fucked with my head a lot. Seeing 5 years old dying from cancer and shit, really makes it all feel kind of pointless.

yes that's what nick land says, but no one takes him seriously since most people are unimaginative retards who can't think

It's not my personal importance, it's humanity's importance as a whole. It's not necessarily relevant - you may think humanity would do just fine without being important, and you could be right

By your own reasoning, why does the planet matter? It's just as insignificant and useless right?

>Because it's so big that statistically it's almost certain there are much bigger and more sophisticated civilizations somewhere out there
That's the midwit take. In reality, the more we/(You) learn about the universe, the more unlikely it becomes that complex life is abundant in it. The sheer number of variables that had to go just right for Earth to have been habitable for as long as it has been are mindboggling, even judged on a cosmic scale. We even have two examples of "failed" planets sitting right next to us in Venus and Mars, which were both likely habitable at one point in their history and yet ended up as a hellscape and a barren rock respectively despite being in the habitable zone of the same star as Earth. Even Earth is fucked in the long run as the Sun continues to age and grow hotter.

We don't appreciate life enough considering how fragile it is. It's a genuine miracle that you're here shitposting on 4chan right now.

There are literally no good arguments against antinatalism

Even the most conservative estimate shows 5 billion earth-like planets in the Goldilocks zone within our single galaxy, let alone the billions of galaxies out there. Statistically there's basically an earth 2.0 out there with the only difference being that Coke has a blue logo and Pepsi has a red one

>By creating new things you are signing them up to struggle without their consent which is unethical.
I've thought of this before and agree. What parts of your post to you disagree with?
>>

It definitely wasn't me who did it.
>>
>>221267343
I live on earth I will never leave this planet why would I care what is there outside or how big the universe is because it doesn't affects me ,what affects me is whether I will be able to put food on my table tommorow or not .
>>
Antinatalism is perfectly valid for Indian men. Being born as an Indian male is basically a fate worse than death.
>>
>>221268584
You can use that argument at any scale
>I live in my apartment, I don't care what happens the next door over because it doesn't put food on the table
>>
>>221268619
I actually don't if something is not directly affecting me or manipulating my enviornment ,I can't give two shits about it .
>>
>>221268435
good thing that life isn't about winning arguments. Those who affirm life will reproduce and antinatalists will select themselves out of the genepool and that will be the end of discussion
>>
he changed in the end

True Detective was so overrated, mostly because Rust was such an insufferable Redditor. It's no wonder this show became popular on here after the Reddit exodus of 2016.

Even the show failed to debunk it with the forced change at the end. Rust just says the complete non-sense about light winning and calls it a day. The way Rust is at the beginning felt like a much sharper and real observation of the world that a detective would see, filled with endless suffering that just keeps coming back no matter what he does.

It must be an actual joy to live this way, to be ignorant of so many things. It's like being Rust and seeing Marty fuck up the perfect life he has just because he can't control his lower iq behavior.
>>
>>221266415
He was just bitter because his daughter died. Obviously this is only a part of his character arc.

Ligotti says this outright in The Conspiracy (...), well before it was adapted to make True Detective.
Most works of pessimistic fiction need a copout to rate. Very few go all the way, ex. "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"
