How the hell is Mick Foley still alive and not quadraspazzed on a lifeglug?

Benoit does a few kayfabe headbutts and goes crazy, Mick takes 10+ chairshots unprotected and he's just fine.

nothing in life is certain. there's only spectrums and ranges. does a life of pro wrestling significantly increase your chances of developing CTE? absolutely, but it's not a guarantee. and then if you do get it, does it manifest itself the same exact way in everyone? absolutely not. also benoit was juicing hard. i don't think mick ever did. also i think mick has had severe short term memory problems or something for awhile

Been a long time, like 20 years, since I've watched any wrestling, used to really WCW and WWF when I was a kid. Is there anything happening in modern pro wrestling that's remotely this interesting or badass?

Pro-wrestling is something that has peaked, it will never be better than it was in the 2000s.

The Attitude Era was unbridled kino.
Even the divas were better. Yeah they couldn't wrestle, but they looked hot. Vince gave the people what they wanted. Now there's like 6,000,000 more of them, 95% are ugly as fuck, they're all covered up, and they still can't wrestle.
Other things fucked it too. TLC and HiaC were cool matches you rarely seen. Then it was just like "bro stick them on raw lol" and it took the novelty away. Obviously the internet and openly breaking character in public didn't help. It's weird how many wrestlers I used to like as a kid then they started doing podcasts and things and I see how most of them are complete pricks.

Foley is just 110% about wrestling and I think there was some divine intervention for that to be his purpose and make it out on the other end without murdering his family or being agonizingly crippled after his tenure. The Japanese extreme matches he did are pure unfiltered kino.

In my country we didn't know anything about wrestling, Hogan was some weird famous guy that we had never actually seen wrestle because it didn't air on TV. Then Fox decided to start airing WWF weekly, which was this exact era, but they would never air things such as Summer Slam, so it was like watching a soap opera with gaps in the story. You didn't know who won what until it was suddenly brought up in the weekly episodes.

Tyson was disgraced by that point. Arnold was in WWF during End of Days, way beyond his prime. Pam An would be the only one, I guess. Cause she was on Baywatch til '01.
Dennis Rodman was literally in MJ's Bulls, IN HIS PRIME. There's even a story of him missing practice during the fucking NBA Finals to attend Nitro with the nWo. This story even made it to the MJ doc, The Last Dance.
The reason WWE never talks about it is because it wasn't them that did it. Their competition outdid them, and they know it. Vince must have been PISSED. He loves that type of shit.
Nothing like this will ever happen again. It's literally insane.
I'm not saying Arnold, Mike, weren't cool, but it was nowhere near hanging out with Prime Dennis Rodman literally playing for another NBA 3-Peat with the GOAT of basketball during the freaking Playoffs.

people remember his iconic bumps but i will always be mesmerised by how even he got to be a prime time performer. like relatively speaking, he's the exception from all of the big stars from that era in that he doesn't look like a superstar. someone else could probably express it better than me but i would assume at some point his wrestling career was on a knife edge because he didn't look like he was it but still somehow rose to the top. his guile for the job and his creativity made him the 1 of 1
i still periodically watch the rock this is your life bit. the three faces of foley will forever by my favourite gimmick

it's either a happy accident or a stroke of genius. maybe a mix of both. mick's booking was just lightning in a bottle like the perfect foil for the stars, he elevated everyone he worked with but then also became a fan favourite. i guess it's slightly sad to think about he had to put his body on the line to get to that point but at the same time, that's also why everyone loved him

Gotta genuine question for the true fans of wrestling. Doesn't it seem a little gay to you? Like are you truly a fan of this and are still 100% straight as an arrow?
Not trying to be a dick. I'm a gay guy and just can't wrap my head around this. It's tough to empathize because there are no good women's sports; i.e. "I watch women's volleyball because I genuinely love the sport". Anon, I have a ballbusting fetish. Whenever I watch a movie with a scene where a woman hits a guy in the balls I find it sexually arousing. Like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NiMXp34p6M&t=285
Now obviously these scenes aren't supposed to be sexually arousing, that isn't the intention of the scriptwriter, the director, or the actors, but nonetheless I find it sexually arousing because I have that fetish.

That is the same way you feel about wrestling. YOU find it sexually arousing because that is YOUR sexual orientation. Heterosexual people do NOT find it sexually arousing because that is NOT their sexual orientation.

>How the hell is Mick Foley still alive and not quadraspazzed on a lifeglug?

It's partly due Mick Foley's normal wrestling style. Excluding OP's video, Mick foley often just involves getting smacked and punched and kicked. He does not jump off ropes, or do high flying maneuvers where he spins his body in the air (like Rey Mysterio) or land on his head.

The OP PICTURE is extremely rare. It's one of only two times in his career he did something so crazy and it really messed him up. It nearly did kill him. His wife and children threatened him to never do that again. So Mick never did high flying moves like that again.

Go watch some Raw clips from 1997 with Hart Foundation Bret. Some of the best heel work you will ever see and he is mostly responsible for the Atittutde Era.

>Because of the WWE's scummy anti-union policies they probably never got paid what they deserved.
That's just how it is. If they were unionized the product would suffer tremendously from a fan perspective and nobody would watch. The only way you get the excitement of the golden eras of wrestling and mma is through cut throat scumbag promotional practices. If the WWF had unionized or the modern WWE or AEW or the UFC or one of the dozen belt holding boxing promotions fan attention would shift away from them toward promotions that aren't unionized and can actually put on exciting shows at a high cadence. If the state regulates and mandates unionization the entire above board sport would die and what fan interest there is would end up trending toward underground promotions like was the norm back when MMA was straight up banned all over the US.
>>
>>221284538
>If they were unionized the product would suffer tremendously from a fan perspective and nobody would watch.
I agree, but the product for the last 15 years has suffered tremendously from a fan perspective and barely anyone watches.
>>
>>221284556
Yeah you're right there, but if I went into my issues there I'd slam into the character limit real fast. I don't know what the fuck these wrestling promoters are trying to do at this point.
>>

All wrestling has become
>flippy shit
>spot fest
>no ring psychology
>kicking out of finishers multiple times on Raw
>heavily scripted promos so the wrestlers can't create and advance their characters
>40+ year old guys at the top of the card (WWF used to make fun of WCW for doing this)
>ads all over the place, even on tables and ladders
>too many commercials
>waaaaaaay too many title belts
WWE Vault on youtube is so fucking entertaining and it shows matches from the "down" period of the early to mid 90s.

>If they were unionized the product would suffer tremendously from a fan perspective and nobody would watch.
How do you figure?

>If the state regulates and mandates unionization the entire above board sport would die
The whole point of unionization is standing united against the employer. If everyone was required to be unionized companies would have no choice but to play ball or go out of business (and if they go out of business fuck em, their greedy Jewish asses didn't have a viable sustaining model to begin with). That wouldn't preclude any of the scummy promotional tactics from happening, it just means that as wrestlers ping pong back and forth between promotions that they know they're financially covered if they suffer a serious injury that keeps them out of action for a long time.
>>
>>221284712
>How do you figure?
Because wrestling is different from sports or Hollywood entertainment. The best product the fan can get in the ring is when wrestlers are cut throat and try to outdo each other. And the higher up on the card you are, the more money you make and the more merch you sell. If they unionized and everyone got a minimum of $500k a year (which is actually what happens in WWE right now and they don't even have a union) there would be no drive to get better and earn that money. The wrestling business is at it's core a traveling carney show and the guy that brings in the crowds gets paid the most. The product got worse once everyone starting getting paid more for not having to excel.

>How do you figure?
Because physically destructive combat and combat adjacent entertainment products show the pattern again and again and again. Poor underpaid fighters/performers put it all on the line for their win bonuses, but at a certain point when their earnings get high enough they lose that hunger and stop putting on exciting shows either by fighting more conservatively (see: boring) to protect their belt/record, or to protect their health by fighting way less frequently or only signing contracts to fight weak competition. The dynamic isn't 100% 1:1 to wrestling because of the more central interest in plotlines handed down from the top for the record don't for a second thing that the UFC and boxing promotions aren't monkeying around to try to build narratives either, they're just putting their thumb on the scale in little ways from time to time instead of dictating winners and losers explicitly but before the product went to shit there was a significant element in wrestlers lobbying for their place in the storyline and as >>221284780 mentions the bigger the spectacle you create and the bigger your name becomes as a fan draw, the more you get paid and the more likely you are to be the guy in the script who ends up with the belt. When everyone can afford bmws just for getting signed it becomes almost impossible as the promoter to incentivize the exciting emergent developments in matches that put asses in seats.
>The whole point of unionization is standing united against the employer. If everyone was required to be unionized companies would have no choice...
Yeah if the state was all knowing and all powerful and all entertainment had to go through state authorization, but it isn't and it doesn't. Wrestling is in competition with all other forms of entertainment, including illegal underground shows. If you can't compete with the fun factor nobody's going to buy your product even if you're the only legal game in town.

Again having a union doesn't preclude any of that from happening. There's no ceiling on what one could earn. It's not like the minimum would be the same across the country, there's obviously COL differences all over the country.

>wrestling is different from sports or Hollywood entertainment.
Not that different. They're still all paid wildly different amounts there based on talent, experience, who's funding a thing, etc.

As I see it a wrestling union is less about guaranteed minimums and more about things like healthcare (which is what Jesse Ventura was most concerned about when he tried to unionize but that kike Hogan ratted him out to Vince). There's already countless stories of Vince fucking over wrestlers in that regard.

Yes it does. WWE has had what could be considered a "union" for the past 15 years (high base pay, payment for drug treatment and other shit, etc) and the product has never been worse.
>Not that different. They're still all paid wildly different amounts there based on talent, experience, who's funding a thing, etc.
You're clearly not a wrestling fan and didn't counter a single argument I made about how the old carny system of "whoever brings in the crowds gets paid the most".
>As I see it a wrestling union is less about guaranteed minimums and more about things like healthcare (which is what Jesse Ventura was most concerned about when he tried to unionize but that kike Hogan ratted him out to Vince).
You don't need a union to get healthcare, so Ventura should have just fought for healthcare. Unions are mostly about higher pay and collective bargaining. That wouldn't work in wrestling and the current poor product and lack of stars shows that. Stone Cold Steve Austin because Stone Cold because wanted to make more money. If he was making $700k as Stunning Steve Austin he probably wouldn't have cared.

Professional wrestling became popular in America because it sits in a sweet spot between sports and theater. People enjoy competition, but they also enjoy stories. Wrestling gives them both: heroes, villains, betrayals, revenge, and dramatic showdowns, all wrapped in an athletic performance. Most fans aren't watching to see who is genuinely the better fighter—they're watching a live action drama where the conflict is settled physically instead of through dialogue.

The roots do partly trace back to traveling carnivals, circuses, and Wild West shows of the 19th century. Promoters discovered that real wrestling was often slow and boring, while staged wrestling with colorful characters and dramatic storylines drew bigger crowds. Television then supercharged it, because wrestling was easy to understand and visually exciting. A viewer could immediately recognize the good guy, the bad guy, and the stakes. In a sense, wrestling is less "fake fighting" and more a form of folk theater—part soap opera, part action movie, part circus spectacle. The roided-up men in speedos and cheesy speeches look ridiculous from the outside, but they're really playing exaggerated comic-book characters, and millions of people find that entertaining.

I knew it.

>Austin was the biggest thing in the fucking world are you high?
