Same experience. Loved the show my whole life. It pisses me off because of the lost potential. They basically have endless resources. They could parody any movie ever made. Any animation style. South Park has 2 types of scenes: cartoon violence because one of the guys is jewish and they think gore is very funny or "let me tell you what you actually suppose to think about this issue to be a cool guy" pretentious monologues. In rare occasions when they try to make a joke it's almost always something extremely primitive and childish, like someone shitting their pants or farting, or puking - it always has to deal with something gross and that's gonna be the whole comedic element of it. If you are kid under 14 you'll probably piss your pants laughing, but for everybody else this shit just sucks. I haven't watched south park since the dude weed shit but they at least tried to incorporate their stupid ideas into the episode instead of just having random skits interspersed throughout. Not saying one is better than the other, family guy is more of a comedy variety thing instead of a long form narrative most of the time. I think it has a super loose narrative but that's just an excuse to make jokes I guess. I haven't watched either in over 10 years I think. It's just a matter of different tastes. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of what early Family Guy was. The show tapped a lot more into the 30-50s than its peers, drawing a lot from variety shows and the sitcoms that would often spin-off from their sketches. That's what the cutaway gags served as: sketch comedy that was interlaced into the narrative. I mean, Seth MacFarlane makes no bones about his love for that era of entertainment. For god's sake, he just inherited Sinatra's entire library last year and has been obsessed with it.

If you wanna label what the show eventually turned into as random slop, that's fine, but Cartoon Wars came out towards the tail end of just S4 of Family Guy, and you'd be absolutely ridiculous to say such a thing about it then.
