To the American, an Englishman looks like the rich WASP founding stock at the tennis court and the organic foods store, not a “British person”. So they cast an Irishman or North Ireland Englishman because they look different enough from typical White Americans but close enough to be seen as kin.
Extrapolate on this concept. White Americans (healthy ones) look hardier than modern Irishmen, but Irish people are known to have endured struggle and strife, for example.
