Brenton Tarrant visited northern Pakistan in October 2018 (about five months before the March 2019 attacks), staying two nights at the Osho Thang Hotel in the Hunza/Nagar area of Gilgit-Baltistan, a popular trekking region. Hotel owner Syed Israr Hussain described him as a regular tourist who was friendly, enjoyed local food, walked around taking pictures, and showed no hostility toward Muslims or Islam. A now-deleted social media post attributed to Tarrant praised Pakistan: "Pakistan is an incredible place filled with the most earnest kind hearted and hospitable people in the world." This fits his broader pattern of extensive solo travels (including North Korea, Turkey, Balkans, Europe, etc.), which he funded with inheritance money.
