>1994 Flintstones movie was a big hit, the film sold a fair amount of merchandise as well. The production was through Amblin Entertainment, which Steven Spielberg was a founder. John Goodman feared being typecast and pleaded to not do more. This stalled the sequels and eventually resulted in the prequel "Viva Rock Vegas"

>Matthew McConaughey was getting offers to do numerous rom com movies, with salaries over $10m. He turned them down and took a 2 year stall in his career till he landed the Lincoln Lawyer.

Goodman was smart, the prequel stunk. He even did a joke about it on an SNL opening monologue.

When this film came out and I saw how they had exactly replicated the Flintstones intro, I did whatever the 1990s child version of a Soiface was.
>>
>>221362074
They had entirely different movies planned for sequels. They wanted to film them back to back 2 and 3. He essentially made the whole cast lose millions.

To be honest, Goodman was the best alive actor to be Fred, considering Jackie Gleason was dead and would have been too old anyway.
Fun fact time: when the movie was dubbed in Quebec, people there asked for Goodman to be dubbed by the Quebec animated Fred actor (same for the rest of cast) but the local dubber's guild and Hollywood said no. Main problem is the person who dubs Goodman in Quebec is the voice of the lottery commission there so our dub ended up sounding like a lottery draw.

This was such perfect casting, minus Betty

I don't remember making this post..

I've tried to watch Viva Rock Vegas a couple times but the opening 5 minutes or so reminds me so much of a salvia trip I had as a teenager that I cannot watch it without being overwhelmed with intense anxiety and dread. I actually feel a lump in my throat and my heart beating fast just thinking about it. I know I could just fast forward it but I'm scared that the rest of the movie will trigger those flashbacks too. I've never had a movie give me this feeling before or since.
>>
>>221361858
Besides Betty this movie was well castedified
>>

Rick Moranis as Barney is actually terrible. No one cares though cause everyone likes Rick Moranis. Ted Danson or Dan Aykroyd would have been better fit for the character, but they changed the character because of the casting. Apparently Aykrody was considered for Fred tho.

>minus Betty
That's is like saying a sandwich was perfect minus the wet turd in the middle. Like I agree but at the same time Rosie O'Donnell as Betty was an absolutely absurd fumble. It felt like a deliberate "fuck you" to the audience.
>>
>>221363771
Hard disagree. Super Friends wasn't a good show, that character was just one of many problems.
The Flintstones was a great show before Gazoo showed up and ruined everything.
>>
>>221361858
Goodman was so sour and asshurt about being in this movie
>>
>>221364004
I cant remember if it was Jay Leno or what, but he brings out a Fred Flinstone doll and John looks really uncomfortable about it. He's such a pussy.
>>
>>221363268
>Rick Moranis as Barney is actually terrible
Agree with this, the character has NOTHING of cartoonBarney and it's clear it was changed to suit Moranis. I don't think it's a terrible character or makes the movie bad for it though, it works well enough. but you see a lot of people saying this movie had the "perfect casting" when that's absolutely not true for anyone outside of the Flinstones core family and Mr. Slate.
Barney was completely changed, Betty was terrible, BamBam isn't too different but still noticeable, and Pearl is a completely different character too.
Yeah, Fred and Wilma were aces, but they're not the only actors in the movie.
>>
>>221361858
I dont think I ever seen anyone actually say this movie is good. I agree that Fred was good casting, but everyone else was not great. They also put so much effort into a movie that ended up having one of the lamest plots a cartoon can have. The type of episode where the main character gets rich and acts like an asshole to everyone until he loses everything.
>>
>>221364004
He really was. It's just kind of stupid to me as an actor to think doing it or more would have ruined his career. By this time he'd already worked with the Coens. He also seemingly did paycheck kids movies anyway with The Borrowers and all the voice work he did. I get actors not really wanting to be in big special effects heavy toy commercial type movies, but it's gotta have some major pros to it too.

Steven Spielberg want Harrison Ford as Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, Ford turned him down to do The Fugitive instead. Probably for the best, I dont think Ford would have been as good as Sam Neil in that role.
>>
>>221364438

This is just nepotism because I can't see anyone else in that role and Harrison would've probably made the movie worse. Could you imagine that asshole learning to like kids again like you believe Sam does?

He did Killer Joe around that time and thats when critics took notice.
>>
>>221364775
Fords a good actor in the roles he's done but I agree Sam Neil is underrated. I've never seen a film he was in that I didn't like.

>>221364892
It went Lincoln Lawyer (2011), Killer Joe(2012), and then Mud(2013). It was a strong streak to get him away from girlfriend rom com movies. He very successfully rebranded himself.
>>
>>221364543
I don't see Ford pulling off the role either. Ford seems like a lone wolf and not a team player. The humble and quietness that Sam Neil brought to it as well. He was a doctor, not a charismatic action man, but explains things to calm kids. It's wonderful casting and we're all lucky Ford knew he was wrong for it.

Goodman didn't want to play Fred to begin with. Spielberg announced in front of a bunch of executives with Goodman present that he'd accepted the part before he actually had, and Goodman felt like he couldn't turn it down at that point without making an enemy out of Spielberg.
