Not sure if it's anime or just Japanese culture in general. Watched Noroi recently and most scenes seemed simultaneously under and over acted. Maybe I'm just racist though. I used to live in Portugal and if someone turned a corner and saw a fucking dog they would inevitably gasp and say oh my God how scary. Every goddam time. Of course they watch soap opera and reality TV exclusively so maybe you're on to something here...
