>It's an underrated classic!Actually, it just sucks. Is there a term for a film which initially (and correctly) got a poor reception, but was later 'rehabilitated' (wrongfully) by revisionists? Because this is one.
>>221370697Call it a ‘Silver Shamrock’ after the other archetype of this phenomenon: Halloween III
>>221370697Almost all of them actually. The real misunderstood rough gems are usually recognized quite early after their failure. Revisionism these days is just "hey, what if bad movie...is actually good?"
>>221370697Popeye was middling popular as a cartoon. You are misinformed.
>>221370697that's just what a cult classic is, they're called that because only a small (but vocal) group of fans keep praising it when most people think something sucks.I haven't seen this film so I don't know if you're right or wrong
>>221370728Trvke
>>221370697>Is there a term for a film which initially (and correctly) got a poor reception, but was later 'rehabilitated' (wrongfully) by revisionists?I dunno, pseudo-vindication?
>>221370697Its called you got filtered.>Robert Altman>Robin Williams first film lead role, Shelley Duvall as the perfect Olive, Paul Dooley as the perfect Wimpy, Paul Smith as the perfect Bluto>An actual giant hand built set with actual interiors on an actual seaside while actual boats purposefully sunk and destroyed for the set>Music by the GOAT Harry Nilsson, with awesome demos you can listen to where he's drunk as fuck and stoned>His music played in Orchestra/musical form by the entire cast (the album version does not sound like the actual live performances of the film)>Written by Jules Feiffer who was an actual comic strip cartoonist>He asked Altman if he wanted the movie to be like the Fleischer cartoons or the Segar comic strips. He said both. So they did both and it worked.>Fellinis' cinematographer for some of his best kinos>The guy who produced the Godfather, the Conversation, Chinatown, Serpico, etc>They have the Altman conversations within conversations, actual funny dialogue if you pay attention>Weird special effects>Giant props>Set destruction>Somehow Disney Paramount paid for it>Also has the actual 2D Popeye in the beginningIts like a movie that should be
>>221370714Halloween 3 is a shitty twilight zone episode with one scary scene. Total trash. 1 and 4 are the best movies
>>221371224I had no idea Nilsson did the music. Well fuck I might have to watch this piece of shit after all l. Altman is known to filter many so can't be surprised. I show people Nashville all the time and they usually don't get it
>>221371224I hate that an entire generation of retards watched thr lazy Popeye RLM video that didn't even cover any of this and people now just think it's lame. They didn't even mention the music being written by Harry Nilsson.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dswVK5si45M
>>221371224>giant-hand built set
>>221370697Robin Williams entire filmography
>>221370697its a fun kids movie, don't be a twat
remake when?
>>221371288Real and true.
>>221371330she cute
>>221371468Puta sex
>>221370714I do love the ending scene so fucking much!Turn it off! Turn it off!
>>221371224Exactly. This movie rules. >They have the Altman conversations within conversations, actual funny dialogue if you pay attentionEspecially this. My favorite scene is the boat chase with Popeye and Pappy bickering with each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a-JcraSl84
>>221370697Im popeye the muslim manIm popeye the muslim man!I rape and I pillage, I burn down your villageIm popeye the muslim man!TOOT TOOT
It simultaneously sucks but is also fascinating and has interesting visuals. I like it despite every fiber of my brain telling me it's terrible, maybe because I first saw it as a child and was confused as fuck how the he'll this was Popeye.
>>221370697>Is there a term for a film which initially (and correctly) got a poor reception, but was later 'rehabilitated' (wrongfully) by revisionists?"Prequelitis"
>>221370794It's terrible in terms of story, sound design, the music, I mean I guess the acting is decent enough, but where it really shines is the visuals, especially the set design, they fucking built the ramshackle stylistic seaside town, it still exists today.
>>221371224The music is the weakest but I agree with the rest of what you said.
>>221371247The music is the only good parthttps://youtu.be/bBh2O5h-oMU
>>221371224OP fucking destroyed
>>221370714Halloween III is fine. The movie was judged poorly because people expected it to be a Michael Myers movie, not because it was bad in and of itself.By comparison, OP posted a live action adaptation of a cartoon that leans extremely heavily into being a cartoon (see: everything Popeye does) in its source material. Those never work.
>>221370697Yes we call that "pulling a Godfather 2".
>>221373113That won Best Picture you idiot
>>221373264So did Parasite and Green Book.
>>221370714I love Halloween III because it is actually aboit Halloween and Trick r Treating
>>221372655>>221372680>>221372632>>221372694>The music is bad>No the music is good>No it's all bad>No it's all goodAbsolutely, 100%, filtered. Its genuinely an almost perfect film and I am glad it's getting a 4k release.>Robin Williams is actually acting, most of it is done through facial expression because most of his lines were overdubbed>The cast is half believable and half unbelievable characters>Brings in a bunch of comic strip characters like Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy>Entirely played out like if it was an episode of the cartoon>Several actors appear in different Altman films and they also happen to play different characters at time in the film because the comic Thimble Theatre was basically a cast of characters performing for the readerYou owe me an apology + 50 cent getting filtered tax.
>>221370697"Yuck Yuck" status?
>>221370697Happens with directors too.
>>221374447It's a much better adaptation of a comic than the majority of current day adaptation of comic books and books. It's a more faithful portrayal of the source than the entire franchise of GoT.And that's because the entire production team didn't feel smarter than the writer of Popeye in the same way than the writers of GoT and HotD feel smarter than Martin and above the books.
