GOAT soundtrack
GOAT visuals
It's basically an ad for the manga, which contains the actual story.

It's an allegory for being a paraplegic lesbian in ancient Mesopotamia

The Manga wasn't finished when they made the movie, they had to wing the story. Doesn't matter, it's animation porn.

What was his fucking problem?
>>
literally capeshit done right
>>
>>221371853
The animation is a work of art, that’s it
It’s otherwise a butchered version of an amazing manga
>>
>>221371853
Akira is a really cool guy. I like his motorcycle
>>
>>221371895
/tv/ would lose their collective mind if they adapted the manga and kept the giant tranny woman character.
>>
>>221371853
it was a deconstruction.
>>
Why did they keep yelling about Canada?
>>
>>221371853
Who cares, motorcycle go vroom vroom
>>
>>221372693
it was not supposed to be a direct panel-for-panel adaptation though. it was meant to showcase what the visual medium was capable of, and it excelled at doing just that.
>>
>>221371895
>It's basically an ad for the manga, which contains the actual story.
Even in the manga is visuals over substance.
The story is mediocre at best.
>>
>>221374623
Yeah, nah, you're a cunt
>>
>>221374795
You really think if they put out a sequel to one of the most popular anime movies ever and included a character that looks like Dwayne Johnson with tits and is called a woman, that /tv/ would have nothing to say except "yeah we love Chiyoko! She's the best and so feminine!"? You're daft, mate.
>>

Amoeba can't contain the soul of a person.
>>
idk apparently people rave about the animation
I imagine for the time it was quite crazy, but I watched it for the first time just a few years ago after having already watched dozens of anime movies like Nausicaä, Porco Rosso, Ghost in the Shell, Jin-Roh, Night is Short, Perfect Blue, etc... and Akira didn't impress me at all. I don't remember one character that was interesting to me or what the plot of the film was beyond the basic premise.
>>
>>221371853
i love it, but it peaks in the first 10 mins with the music and the shots of neo tokyo and the biker fight
>>
>>221375568
>idk apparently people rave about the animation
>I imagine for the time it was quite crazy,
And it still is. Akira is a very visually impressive movie that inspired decades of copycats to this very day. Sometimes it's not about the story, but simply the craftsmanship and spectacle with which it is told. Sadly, people have become desensitized to such things.

Akira is iconic and uniquely gorgeous, but yeah. If I want to watch an anime with better characters and story, it's not particularly difficult to do. But there's more to entertainment than characters and story. Sometimes you literally just want to watch artists use their experise to make shiny keys jingle.

The story is fine though and perfectly good. It's better than Ghost in the Shell's story which is bare bones, just "what is a soul when you ship of theseus a person?" And mysterious baddies trying to recapture their AI experiment. Akira has a whole believable post apocalyptic world where bored teens are fighting in bike gangs and many have mental problems due to drugs and trauma. There's riots and cults. Secret government experiments also running amok. And exloring what happens when a young, emotionally stunted kid that's been bullied his whole life suddenly gets God-like powers?
>>
>>221374653
Too bad they’re practically out of the movie after the first 10 minutes
>>
For those who have read the manga, does it get even better?
>>
>>221376483
I would say so, yes, Akira is actually a character in the Manga. The movie is only half the story.
>>
>>221376472
>Akira has a whole believable post apocalyptic world where bored teens are fighting in bike gangs and many have mental problems due to drugs and trauma. There's riots and cults. Secret government experiments also running amok.
I mean, none of that is realy a "story", though. Most of it is just there to facilitate certain kinds of imagery and atmosphere, and the entire concept of giving an abused boy god-powers was so they could draw him mutating and fucking obliterating shit.

That's just a valid genre of anime. It's cool stuff for the sake of looking/sounding cool. It's animators saying "I want an excuse to draw this idea, in particular". I think it's one of the reasons a lot of anime falls flat with western audiences who immediate demand some kind of narrative that holds their hand and tells them how they should feel about what they are seeing, instead of just enjoying the act of seeing it depicted in such a bombastic and stylistic manner.
>>

>The movie is only half the story.
kind of the same deal with the Berserk anime. It's a small part of the whole story that doesn't give a full glimpse of Guts' character, and it barely even stands on its own. They were just like "damn, this man a is full of cool shit, let's animate this arc and it'll be rad"
>>
>>221372687
In the second half of the manga, Tetsuo reminds me a lot of Magneto, creating an ethnostate for psychics and his general, arrogant demeanor. He's a much more interesting character ultimately in the manga.
>>
>>221375891
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence was the first movie where I felt like actual cyberpunk concepts were properly portrayed in a film and not just used for window dressing.
>>
>>221377824
Tetsuo was a scumbag with no good qualities that got given a redemption he didn't deserve. Akira, the brain dead toddler, was more interesting
>>
I have weeb fatigue
>>
I always chalked up the story not making sense to the fact it was adapting a much larger piece. But then I saw it in theaters and I realized I’m just a retarded little gay bitch with no attention span. It makes perfect sense and it’s great.
>>
Blu Ray is $11 on Amazon right now.

fpbp

The movie is like 1/5 of the whole story.

mogged by gits in both and in plot too xD
>>
>>221371853
You're not supposed to.
Just enjoy the art and music.

Ditto with ghost in the shell and patlabor 2
>>
>>221377189
>I mean, none of that is realy a "story", though.
A story without worldbuilding is just a self-indulgent monologue delivered on an empty stage - which is what Oshii's GitS ultimately is.
>>
>>221371853
The restless masses and disenfranchised youth of a bloated overpopulated urban shithole run by a corrupt and oppressive government grow unstable until the entire is city quite literally threatening to burst at the seams due to the explosive revelation of a secret power hidden by the lies the cities entire existence was built on.
>>
>>221377224
Golden age is the only thing that gets adapted because it's the only good part of berserk
>>
>>221378393
Put some respect on Akira, it's one of the most intricately drawn animated film. Took hours to create single frames.
>>
>>221371895
>>221378484
Why the fuck wouldn't they make the rest of the movies then
>>
>>221374623
Why's that? /tv/ didn't lose its mind over the exmilitary brute of a troon in squid game. In fact it was regarded as one of the more well liked characters from the s2 cast.

I watched Innocence for the first time earlier this year and it was one of the few movies in the last couple of years I've watched that made me think for several days about it's themes.
Some of it is kind of terrible, especially the philosophy dump dialogue, but the actual story is one of the best I've ever seen in an anime film.
>>
>>221379843
iirc it took two years for Akira to be made, and the studio worked 24/7. It's a fantastic movie but making a full 13 episode anime telling the whole story would dilute the power a single blow/movie delivered. So you watch the movie, get your mind blown away, then read the manga and get the full story. It's was a very smart decision.
>>
>>221371853
You have to read the manga, it's a massive story and the movie skips 90% of it.
>>
>>221379892
I always wanted to ride one. The best I can do is Half-Life 1. I don't even think HL2 had any diagonals.

Tetsuo? That pea brain!
