The twin brothers are angels or something stopping Corso from getting the last real engraving. Then when hes sent back they are either gone or changed because the guy taking the place apart is played by the same actor. Is there any clue to what happened to them? Did they get killed or removed by the woman? Did they convert to her side where they purposely getting out of the way because Corso was somehow now ready? Is there a clue to what happened with them?

Amazing how much worldbuilding Polanski managed to do with so little screen time. The bums accosting Corso in front of Balkan building, everyday people being overworked and nervous, degenerate scions willingly ruining someone's life work, decrepit aristocrats... all that in total amounts to like 5 minutes of the movie. Still, the dying Europe of Ninth Gate seems idyllic to what we have now. In today's setting, Corso would be knifed by migrants or run over by a Glovo driver or both.
