no fuck that shit. i don't need sound from 0-100db. give me sound from like 50-100db so i don't have to keep turning it up to hear the quiet parts and then turn it down for the loud parts.

It's because the mixing/mastering engineers create one master (5.1 for example) which will work great for theaters, but they often don't consider how well it will translate or downmix to stereo. I fucking hate when there's insane dynamic range. Capture and process your audio in 24bits, but don't fucking send it to me to where the dialogue is mixed at -40dBFS and then an explosion peaks at full scale.

Doesn’t this have something to do with modern TV speakers as well? I remember reading that once

Probably because they don't give a shit. It also doesn't help that loudness isn't that well standardised (even R128 is not perfect) because you can have dialogue mixed in at retarded levels without any EQ/compression, but if your mix hits the target loudness (-23 LUFS or whatever it may be) then you can say that you did your job.

Audio processing disorders are common with autism
>>
subtitles are fucking DISTRACTING and ruin the pacing. they literally ruin the tension of scenes because you can see what someone is going to say before they say it. bitch you speak english learn how to pay attention. sound mixing has not suddenly changed, what has changed is the normalization of subtitles thanks to short videos. THATS IT. it's just because everyone watches too much fucking TikTok and now they are accustomed to always reading the words so it feels like they are missing something when they don't have them. just stop watching with subtitles for a month and your attention to the dialog will come back.
>>
>>221375368
Even people who aren't autistic complain about shitty sound in modern TV and movies. You can go back and watch old movies where it is not an issue.
>>
>>221374089
Honestly I'm not convinced the DEI hires they have working on films even understand how sound actually works.

Your average Youtuber doesn't, just look at old shit where a lot of that wasn't automated. That faggot Nostalgia Critic literary yelled into his laptop mic for over a decade in a room with sound bouncing off the walls every which way. Even when he was making bigger productions he didn't use boom mics or any kind of actual sound production. Some fag who was part of one such production said he tried to talk to him and his brother about it and just got blank stares back. The logic with these retards is:
>I can hear it fine, so there MUST be something wrong with your set up or you're imagining things
https://youtu.be/fAvSjTiZYkI?t=30

They have no idea how sound works or how the human brain perceives sound. That the only reason they can 'hear' it is because they read the script, were there when it was recorded, so they already know what was said. That makes them 'think' they can hear it better than they actually can. Like if you hear parts of a song quietly under background noise, you can eventually identify and 'hear' and it IF you know the song already.

It seems to be why Hack Nolan blows out your eardrums with the music over the dialogue. The same reason your average n00b Youtuber does it, unless they have some kind of program auto- ducking or helping them not fuck it up as bad.

The level of audio illiteracy among those who are engaged in video and podcast production for a living is downright fucking astounding.

Trying to tell these ignoramuses anything is like trying to explain to those idiots that are causing audio feedback on a group call by not wearing a headset that they are the cause of the problem while they sit there an insist it can't be on their end because THEY can't hear any feedback. Only brute force digital processing in the current era to eliminate feedback automatically has saved us from those clueless fucking arseholes.
>>
>>221373986
The Dark Knight is one of the worst offenders of this. Some of the dialogues in that movie is literally unhearable. Watch this and tell me you can understand a single thing Gordon is saying without turning on the stable volume button.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StDCqrxrdHY
>>
>>221375775
This. You gotta love how the music arcs up to really help with that.

The actors aren't so much the problem though. Oldman is speaking less clearly than Eckhart, so you naturally tend to blame the actor, but soundfags can capture and mix pretty much anything given the chance. I doubt Nolan of all people understands this though, being the same faggot who signs off on his brain-thumping retardo music over the top of said dialogue.

I bet faggots like him actually wonder what all the guys in the audio department actually do. Probably tells the guy with the boom mic to stand back out of his shot and expects them to catch everything on some crap omnidirectional and fix everything in post as if you can do that with everything like some kind of voodoo magic.

Jokes on him when he's replaced by AI that just does LITERALLY FUCKING EVERYTHING "in post" making faggots like him completely unnecessary.

Seriously worked with cocksuckers who don't get shit before. Think because you can use fucking Photoshop they can give you a crap picture taken in the dark and expect you to turn it into a glamour shot. What the fuck do these idiots think all the equipment and shit on their movie set is actually for exactly?

We don't do vocalization in schools any more because it offends the people who babble in ebonics. I'm gonna guess it's the same for acting schools. There must be some actors that will protest when the director tells them to speak clear because that's how they bad pronounce English.

why's that people irl and random shit quality yt videos are so much more intelligible than movies?
>>
>>221374909
That's fair, but a well made mix will always collapse down without falling apart. It's just like how a well made stereo mix of a dance track will downmix to mono without the kick/bass getting lost due to phase cancellation. Yeah, no shit the super wide synths and other elements will get a bit lost in mono, but the core of the track should always be present in the mid, even if you're in stereo. If you try to downmix the dark knight to stereo and you can't hear the dialogue, it's a shit mix.
>>
>>221375775
do filmmakers think that normal people speak like autists with motor disfunctions?
>>
Sound is just as important as lighting. We've all seen poorly produced films that were simply too dark. If you can't see the damn movie without straining your senses, it's just as bad as straining to hear it. Watching a movie should be easy in this regard. A comfortable experience.

Also it should naturally go far enough to account for some blue collar fag who works in a metal shop all day whose hearing is no longer perfect. You of course can't account for every profoundly deaf faggot, but if the average age of your target audience is not 12, then saying 'you'd be able to hear it if your hearing was perfect' isn't the audience's fucking problem.
>The ONLY solution to communicating with someone with imperfect hearing isn't for them to listen harder, it's for YOU to speak louder and more clearly.FACT!

Hollywood used to understand that part of fictional entertainment was a larger-than-life readability for the audience. It's why stage actors wear eye makeup, exaggerate facial expressions, body language, and intentionally project their voice to the back row of the theatre. Film allows for more subtle acting but only because you can compensate with directional mics and close ups. If you fail to do that it's just as annoying and worthless as an actor mumbling on stage.
>>
>>221376039
I fucking guarantee you part of the problem is the people who know better can't tell these n00bs anything without getting an attitude or being called a sexist, racist, homophobe or whatever the fuck. If they don't see the problem it doesn't exist and you must just be trying to oppress them.

Just imagine being an old skool 'pale stale male' Disney animator trying to tell the stronk whammen diversity hires what they were obviously doing wrong. Pretty easy to guess how that shit would go down.

>my parents used to enjoy the 90 minute crime film of the week
>not anymore -- "you can't understand what anybody says"
Check it out and it's a combination of very poor soundmixing (loud action scenes, quiet whisper scenes), the actors mumbling, and the actors no longer speaking properly but featuring thick, incomprehensible dialect.

I don't get it. The purpose of the TV crime film of the week is not to be young, dynamic and "authentic", it's to be watched on TV by a mainly older audience. Also it's financed by mandatory TV fees (a kind of tax), and many people have criticized mumbling, but nothing seems to be done about it.

No, it was not. I know because from time to time they show old memorable episodes from the 80s and 90s, and you could understand everthing in those. Directors still knew how to make films back then. It seems to be a lost art these days.

Most kids from all ethnicities have issues with pronunciation, that's normal. School and your parents help you with that. For most people, it just goes away and it's never some minor issue with a few words or contractions. I remember that, since I was a kid, my parents always corrected my words and pronunciation.
Blacks, OTOH, not only have absent parents or parents who speak poorly, they have created their own language that's basically a poor spoken English. So, you can't correct thelr bad grammar, spelling, or enunciation. And you now can't correct anyone else.
