Train to Busan.
Visually it looks silly, often. But the story it tells hits me very hard.

Night of the Living Dead is my favourite. I don't think non-Romero zombie films are zombie films at all, although I enjoyed Zombieland and the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

It wasn’t revolutionary sure, but you have to come up with something new to be good. It tweaked a few things here and there but it also didn’t include a bunch of garbage. It was a slow burn survival where a man used common sense and good survivor knowledge to survive. He didn’t make stupid decisions due to bored writers. It also reminded me a lot of project zomboid.

I think something that makes it so good is that the costumes and sets are genuinely terrifying, which shows on the faces of the cast. They seem genuinely scared and nervous. If I was an actor and had to do scenes with Tar man and other nasty looking zombies it wouldn’t be hard to conjure up some genuine fear.

I do enjoy movies that feature the first days/weeks of the apocalyptic kickoff. I’m disappointed when they start the movie with “6 months later” and jump to total collapse. The process of collapse so interesting. It was probably the only good part of World War Z.

Watch I am a Hero, it's cool because the protagonist goes to work several days in a row and sees on the news as the zombie apocalypse gets slightly worse each day, until one day he randomly sees zombies killing people on his street while he's going to work.
>>
>>221394247
That’s cool, I like that. That’s realism I can get behind.
>outbreak slowly spreading over the course of a week or so
>despite media coverage, the average human response is to continue trying to maintain their routine
>because an outbreak wouldn’t just hit everyone at the same time all over the country
>one side of town is in ruin while the other side is still going to work and sending emails
I don’t know why that is so interesting.
>>
>>221394293
Thats the opening chapters of world war z.
Also sean of the dead since the movie takes the POV of one of those people who is oblivious until zombies are in his back yard. And there are plenty of clues in the background that it hasn't come out of the blue.
The beginning of dawn of the dead is cops storming a building where the tenants have mostly handled the zombie problem on their own, and the swat raid is unrelated.
The problem I think is focusing on the outbreak part would just be too long and slow if you wanted to do it realistically.
Not to mention zombies are almost always monster-as-metaphor, so they almost always stand in for some other kind of social ill that causes everyone to be oblivious and apathetic, which means the problem is already there.
>>
>>221394452
> The problem I think is focusing on the outbreak part would just be too long and slow if you wanted to do it realistically.
I’ve always held the belief that a good zombie apocalypse story doesn’t have to be the end of the world(maybe I’m misusing the world apocalypse). Just like WWZ, a zombie crisis can end after a few weeks or months and still be interesting. When a zombie apocalypse drags into years, it just becomes a survivalist story with zombies in the background, no different from a survival movie where a natural disaster or aliens destroy everything. I like the initial panic of trying to secure resources and arming yourself against the immediate threat of zombies and other looters. That’s why season 1 and 2 of walking dead are the only good seasons.

>>
>>221395511
I’d love to see more attention to detail on firearms and some mention of prepping culture. It’s rare to find a zombie movie where at least 1 character is mildly prepared. And if there is one, he’s usually the bad guy for selfishly hoarding supplies. And the guns are always atrocious. Walking dead especially. It’s like every zombie movie ever made has a legal clause that bans anyone who’s ever handled a gun from setting foot on set. John Wick proved that you can make a good movie AND use realistic combat and gun techniques.

They go 3 ways. Slapstick, "actually, humans are the real monsters," or action/gore Snyder/michael bay style. 28 days later nails it better than most but even it's not a perfect movie. I feel like a whole 20 hour long episode series could be made just about the start of the zombie apocalypse. Like other anons here have said the collapse it was is the most interesting and sets up the most potential human drama and zombie scares. The beginning of 28 days later, the whole bit in Dawn of the Dead where her neighborhood is getting absolutely fucked by zombies is great. They could also have the military be competent good guys instead of moronic villains but show how bad the zombies are getting when the breakouts destabilize the chain of command, logistics etc. There are so many potential stories.
>>
>>221395718
I agree.
Shitty attention to detail on firearms really kills the vibe, just look at The Walking Dead for example lmao.
>>
>>221395193
what's wrong with VLC?
>>
>>221395785
It just tells me they don’t understand what makes zombie movies good. They keep trying to make zombie movies serious. Zombie movies are good because zombies are cool, they defy logic. You don’t need to dedicate time and energy to explain why biologically zombies are feasible. You don’t need to write a whole social drama set up with each character, tell their story through action and body language, not long drawn out conversations that serve no purpose. Many times the action scenes feel like cheap transactions between dialogue scenes, instead of being the main focus. That’s why Army of the Dead is good in my eyes. It’s short blurbs of dialogue between action scenes
>>
>>221395771
There’s a reason the first and second episode of walking dead were the best. Exploring the downtown area to find guns, ammo, and supplies. Then retreating to a camp outside the city. It was a great balance of direct conflict with zombies and surviving as a group.
>>
>>221395771
The remake of the dawn of the dead have a good portrayal of the early stages of the outbreak.
No one really knows what's going on, full panic.
People completely caught off guard.
You never get to know what caused the outbreak either, which is a good thing.
Supposedly supernatural cause (kino).
The military try to help the public with sanctuaries (fort benning) but the outbreak is world ending so you don't get to see the military, but you get the feeling that they didn't have time to mobilize.

This is why they should do some random series or movie and have it start out as your standard drama with slight hints there's something going on in the background and then half way have it turn in to a zombie outbreak.

The scene doesn't make any sense from a forensic perspective.
So they mauled eviscerated and mutilated a group of people instantly and on the spot that their bodies are neatly piled up on one another. No one tried to run away, they just stood there and get slaughtered. The pram is a bloody mess with bits and guts on it but somehow the material endured the force of the onslaught brought down on the baby. Whenever a zombie story lasts several years after an outbreak, it will inevitably lead to "humans are the real monsters" storylines but when it is a fresh outbreak, you will see both the best and worst of humanity, selfish fucks leaving people to die for their own sake and selfless heroes doing what they can to help others even at the risk of their own lives, it is definitely more interesting
>>
>>221406244
>Whenever a zombie story lasts several years after an outbreak, it will inevitably lead to "humans are the real monsters" storyline
Such a tired trope. Just once I'd like to see one where humanity is united and rebuilding, but still lives with the limitations of not being able to leave their own immediate area to start connecting with other settlements.

Kek yeah, I read the books and played the games. The books are a lot better than the games imo but that's not surprising. I thought Metro Exodus was not as good though, it was fun but didn't feel like a Metro game to me because of all the new game mechanics.

Isn't that Hitchcock's "The Birds"?

This was a lot of fun.

The original was a very tense, very interesting movie

I was upset that the opening of Exodus literally has out the twist ending of 2035 that Artyom was hoping for people outside of the metro that live and that the leaders of the metro knew and actively kill anyone that stumbles on them and uses radio jamming to hide themselves from the world

B17 was so fucking creepy.

How is that a hard concept to understand?

I suppose they couldn't just make it the book over again, so it's a continuation of the book. I still wasn't thrilled with the mechanics or the vibrant scenery, I enjoyed being deep in the bowels of the Metro and underworld. If I want an open world post apocalyptic game on the surface, I'll just play STALKER.

>>The problem I think is focusing on the outbreak part would just be too long and slow if you wanted to do it realistically.
>This is why they should do some random series or movie and have it start out as your standard drama with slight hints there's something going on in the background and then half way have it turn in to a zombie outbreak.

That's exactly what Shawn of the Dead does!!!FACT!!!

Yeah. The opening is the best part of Dawn of the Dead IMO. The "things are falling apart but haven't fully collapsed yet" part is the most interesting part of apocalypse movies to me.

Fear the Walking Dead was great for that, up until the show shit the bed when that fuck Gimple took over for season 4. You can see the writing quality disappear immediately.

That show fucking cratered once the johnny depp looking dude got killed off I cringewatched it and I couldn't believe how fucking terrible it got later on. Like unironic spanish soap opera levels of retard writing. They also had an entire episode with a baby crying. At that point I guess they were trying to see how much of a middle finger they could give people

Yeah that's the Gimple jump off point, apparently it was the actors demand to be killed off since he wanted off the show because it changed so badly. So much potential and they just swapped the showrunners and writers just to make it Wlaking Dead 2.0 (which itself was already in deep ratings trouble).
