2012 was the last good year.

Last good year. 2013 was the last "normal" year. Things really changed in 2014 with the Ferguson riots after that, racially charged incidents basically became a constant backdrop to American life. The Trayvon Martin case was huge, but it still felt like one of those big racial controversies that flares up every few years, kind of like the O.J. Simpson trial. Ferguson was different. It changed the whole landscape for good and ensured everything would suck, every incident came with sustained national media coverage, activism, and polarization, and that just became the new normal.
