Bit of a rant but it needs to be said. I've read Homer in translations and tried to read the Emily Wilson translation. I'm also learning ancient Greek. I'm ESL but some tips for English speakers:>English is a synthetic language >it does not flow for Homer, not since long before Chaucer was alive>Homer actually does work in Italian, German, French, Polish, etc translations and probably would have in the Old English language>the Fagles translations are actually not bad at all if you can appreciate prose in the context of poetic depthMeaning if you want to actually know what is going on in a way that is "honest" in these stories, it's not as expressive but it is your best choice. It doesn't have the same structure but he can paint a picture that is vivid to English speakers. NOT the case for people who are ESL reading Fagles, it's like looking at Rembrandt in black and white to us. Everything is there but it's off. However it's your best bet unless you have time to learn ancient Greek. The Emily Wilson translation is a neutered catastrophe. She does not even understand her own language or the decisions of older translators, because she is not a good translator. Her complaints of hallucinations or sexism in epic poetry about bronze age warrior aristocrats is laughable but the way she goes about it is actually dumber. For instance the word "slut" was in a medieval context a kind of retarded unwashed person, someone totally void of agency. The way it was used by prior translators wasn't really referring to sexual liberties with the suitors in the Odyssey - it was a literal pirate purging his household of all he hated, including the servants who wasted his family's resources and didn't poison the bastards' wine or something.
