My opinion is that its better to be feared more than loved or even respected, but none of that matters against the fanatical believers and the mindless. A random junkie with no concept of time or consequences of their actions will pop you easily and for no reason, if you are loved, hated, feared, mocked, whatever. Same is true of someone who believes in their cause and can't see in reason to fear for their own life or to show you respect for their own good.
