It is literally done all the time. Corporate will email you and tell you to cancel a show if something else would sell better. They don't care about 1, 5 or even 20 tickets being sold. A Toy Story show in the same timeslot would sell 200 so just cancel Superflop and refund the tickets. If a few people show up annoyed just give them passes for another day, it's still a net positive.

Do you think theatres just change what movies are playing on what screens on the fly? It's not like if you threw on Minecraft a bunch of 11 years are gonna show up in 10minutes to watch it.

General policy if there are no tickets sold is to run the movie for 15-30minutes, then turn off the projector to save the bulb. On some systems its an automated process, sometimes its manaul, and unless its a indie theater they likely won't bother cause some employee aint gonna give a shit about saving 90minutes of bulb runtime.

They're less likely to do it for matinee showings because shit is going to be slow no matter what movies they have.
This usually happens when there's a surprise box office hit. Theaters are usually pretty good at gauging audience interest and allocate screens appropriately but if something ends up being more popular than expected they cancel the obscure arthouse flick that two people wanted to see so they can try and fill another theater.
