Great timing. Just finished. Totally pitiful and marginally comfy creature feature shot in Colombia. A cement plant dumping waste into a lake creates a giant reptilian hand puppet that eats a white secretary and a few alky fishermen. 95% of the movie is Robert Mitchum's uglier son arguing with a blonde reporter he of course ends up sleeping with, the plant manager who's a discount Christopher George debating which of his two love interests to fuck, and the director's kids as a couple of snoops trying to get a picture of the monster. Boring boring boring and a movie i had to attempt to watch many times over the years before I finally could finish it without passing out.

I seent Weapons last night. It was ok. It felt like the director wanted to make a Hereditary, Babadook, It Follows style movie but didn't have the chops to successfully ape that kind of movie. The gore and violence was clearly inspired by the Evil Dead series but it's a sanitized version of it. The fork face mutilation, the black vomit and head butting, the vegetable peeler to the face, etc were all very Evil Dead but super toned down. The Naruto running was silly. The witch was cool but we didn't get enough of her being witchy and creepy. The whole thing felt small and not very exciting. The way the movie was structured made it so there weren't really any surprises and everything was pretty telegraphed. I'm not quite sure what the metaphor is supposed to be. Are evil boomers priming children and weak people to be their mindless weapons as they cling to their fading and increasingly powerless lives?
>>221399089I see someone hasn't seen the movie, lol
>>221399224Creggers said it was partly about growing up with alcoholic parents, hence the part with the catatonic people needing fed by a kid. But otherwise I don't think there's that much to read into it.I didn't mind the fact that the plot was pretty straight forward, there's still a lot of juice just in "a film about a witch". But to me it was just too long and needed editing down for excitement as you say.

>>221399302I liked it and think it's a solid horror movie but I wished it had the unsettling witchiness of Hereditary and had actually gone all the way with the gore like the Evil Dead series instead of sanitizing and truncating those scenes. Just watched Curtains (1983), shit's really good but it could have been a lot better. Low points: too many offscreen kills, pacing issues, the killer's background made no sense, and the ending was a wet fart. High points: cinematography is insanely good, the locale is great when we finally get there, and the kills we do get to see are intense. Anon from before was pretty spot on about it being 6/10, but I'm in a good mood so I'd say 7Seriously though how the fuck did she set up her entire "killer lair" in the dude's shed?

Shave off time here and give us longer scenes with group character interactions + the actual audititons that they're here for. Does the twink hot tub fucker even get a single line? Also so much time spent on setting up kills for an ending we don't see, when it's clear from the ice skating scene that they KNOW how to do creepy kills, even with the killer in full broad daylight. In the finale, less time exploring the killers fuck shack (which again doesn't make any sense considering she just got there, how does she basically live there) and for the final scene make it not abrupt and ridiculous. That's all of my whining, but I really think this movie could be worthy of a good remake>>221404378honestly that's a shame, is there any info about what was changed?
>>221399224It never felt like it wanted to be more than am horror movie to me. There were multie times where it could have focused on the drama but it never let the horror lose the central stage

Just finished. Oh, I LOVED this. The atmosphere in this is off the charts, the first half is such a pure, intense and sleazy slasher vibe, with gorgeous color and dudes in all jean outfits attacking blondes with perfect tits that are pointlessly hanging out. The ladies in this are astonishing, the most slasher movie girls ever. Unfortunately it never really pays off, and the creepy killer old people in the second half are a fun enougj experience but kind of a letdown after the venom of the first chapter. Also I think there's no gore in this at all. It's got a great Town Makes a Movie vibe and there are cool unique local actors. The evil doctor is clearly an actual nut job. A thrilling is undercooked little semi-classic.

Watched Hokum yesterday. I thought it was really well done. I think the script needed one more pass because I think I noticed one plot hole/error and I also thought some of the foreshadowing was a little too on the nose. Otherwise it had great pacing and the scares (ie: Payoff) were pretty weak but the suspense/tension (ie: Buildup) more than made up for it.>>221404004I saw the Shatner one. It was pretty good.

>>221405898>How do you say Hokum compares to the other two? Should I bother with them or is it like a Shinkai thing where each iteration gets better? It's more like the V/H/S series where nobody agrees on which is the best and which is the worst. Everybody's list looks different.Me, I say Caveat > Hokum > Oddity. Caveat is a more suspenseful story and has the creepiest scenes, in my opinion. Good afternoon /hor/! Happy Sunday! I hope you all went to Mass today! Threadly reminder that I am owed reparations for A Streetcar Named Desire and I would like them in the form of Longlegs-esque and The-Empty-Man-esque (my two most favorite kinos) kinos that align with/inform my Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist worldview.I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that horror only really works when it has a Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist moral at its core. The entire genre of post-apocalyptic zombie thrillers, for example, ask the question of what happens when law, order, structures and institutions break down. They are inherently anti-revolutionary. A Quiet Place can be read as a critique of political correctness and one of the first victims gets cancelled by one of the monsters from space for praying out loud.Furthermore, as Jay Dyer points out in his Esoteric Hollywood, paraphrasing: the elites have the same sexual morals as the poor underclass. So, really, it has been my middle-class-to-upper-middle-class, Catholic/remnants-of-order-found-in-Protestantism social class that has restrained the baser instincts of man and kept Western Civilization running for a thousand+ years. You can all thank the Church and my social class for the fact that we all didn’t grow up in shanty towns with mud roads, running around barefoot with 20 other bastardos named Jayden, Hayden, Brayden, Grayden, Mayden, Rayden, and Layden.I’d also like the following actors/actresses to be turned into A-listers:>Jack Kesy>Ignacyo Matynia>Ryan Hurst>Caleb Landry Jones (I like this guy’s face)>Kristen Bell>Felicity Jones>Maika MonroeFinally, I’d like my guy, Zak Olkewicz, to get some good writing jobs. Olk has good writing in him — I’m sure of it. He just needs to be put on a regimen of geopolitics (MacKinder, Spykman, Mahan) and then Catholicism, the occult, esotericism, secret societies, fascist literature, etc.

Oh man .... so "Kraken" (2026) may be something for fans of underwater horror. Btw. it's "Kraken" and not "The Kraken", in Norwegian the definite article is appended as -en, so "Kraken" is already "The Krake".First nothing happens, people and the location are introduced. It's fine, it's the most remote backwater of Norway, they have time for that there. Then there's something scary under water. That's well done. Remember Lovecraft, "the greatest fear is the fear of the unknown"? Then unfortunately they show the monster, and it is of course sentient and intelligent. In the end they kill the monster with the exact same underwater sonic device that woke up the monster in the first place. How? Don't know, the plot needs it to happen.I don't know, it was OK overall, competently shot and edited, acting was OK, Norwegian spoken with English subtitles.

>>221399224Most interesting part of weapons is that the villain, like Longlegs, is apart of a kind of cinematic nu-homophobia where the villains are depicted as tranny-coded child abusers despite the directors of both films being lolberals. It's almost like the disgust at trannies has been pushed into the unconscious and it's manifesting itself in their art.Not even anti tranny BTW I like the old school drag queen gay guy troons of yore it's just something I've noticed in horror the last few years.
>>221420598huh?
>>221420635I didn't get that from Weapons although I have heard the witch is a gay/tranny slay queen hero which I don't understand at all. The witch looked like a 65 year old lifelong smoker cat lady from Long Island. Where is the tranny coded part coming from? I haven't seen Longlegs.

Rewatching the 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth. The descendant coming out of nowhere and his deadly double expedition theft - while not horror in itself - feels like something out of a horror story.

>>221406014I don't know if you want to call it a plothole in the most literal sense, but I feel like the idea of the protagonist being in a coma for a couple of weeks was a later addition to the script.I think that, originally, the doping of his flask was meant to suggest that it's possible that he hallucinated almost the entire thing (hence him looking down at his hands to confirm that the manacle marks were there). I think that at one point someone realized that if there wasn't a big timeskip it would be too hard to sneak into the hotel when it's still considered an active crime scene and Irene probably wouldn't have died yet.I think it would have worked better if the protag DIDN'T drink the whiskey on the night of his suicide attempt but does have a swig before setting off with the old man. Some other things that weren't plot holes but I didn't like very much:-I thought it was way too convenient that the protagonist was able to make it back up the dumbwaiter after the big climax. The first time was fine because he had planned when he would go down but it felt pretty contrived that by sheer coincidence it was almost exactly on the hour when he was forced down there on what I assume initially was a suicidal mission.
>>221406014>>221427405-I think the dream sequence with his mother should probably have happened earlier in the film, possibly when he first escapes the witch. I felt like the idea was that up until that point he's still sort of suicidal but that conversation with his mother ("You can't stay here") gives him the will to live and keep going. Too many of his actions before that scene are desperate attempts to stay alive and his frustration at not succeeding doesn't play well with him still apparently not being all that committed to living.-He should not have said 'he was too young' when talking about the guy who shot his mother. As soon as he said that I figured out what I assume was intended to be a twist. When Irene asks a follow up question he should cut her off saying "I really don't like to talk about it" or words to that effect.-Similarly, I was annoyed by the circle of chalk thing. I felt like it was tacky to only mention one single monster and one single defense from it. Maybe have a couple of different methods for dealing with spirits (crossing water, daylight, salt, chalk circle, etc..) and either have him try some of them (the bathtub could serve as 'crossing water' which actually does happen) or at least make the audience unsure of what he's going to find/how he's going to escape. The chalk thing was an extremely obvious Chekov's gun.-That guy running into the burning building at the end, and not just the entrance but deep into the hotel to try and save someone is extremely brave to the point of being unbelievable and/or suicidal.-The recorder seemed to turn on randomly.-You would definitely try to smash a bottle on a femur or someone's back before just immediately going for the skull.
>>221427405I'd have to watch it again too see when he swigs what. I think at least that McCarthy makes films that triggers detail autists, which is neither a criticism of him or them. I think he just likes individual ideas and ties them together into films. I'm a bit more on the surreal side when I watch movies.
I think his persecution has gone far enough, we can have a lil fix
>>221427422I took it as he had a single renewed goal of thanking the irish lass.>The chalk thing was an extremely obvious Chekov's gun.True>The recorder seemed to turn on randomly.Yeah I just took that as witch spookiness. Same as the TV. But again, fair because he's just throwing shit out there. With a 90m film, you're getting a bit pressed for time to build that many points into the film and they'd probably have the same oddly telegraphed feel. >You would definitely try to smash a bottle on a femur or someone's back before just immediately going for the skull. He gets a defense here that writer in the film is the bad writer kek. That reminds me though, one reason I actually liked it was the wrap around. I thought it was surprisingly moving and a really clever way to show the MCs arc. It's like a microcosm of what you're saying though because it's silly in multiple ways if you inspect it closer.
>>221427734Even responding to his posts gets you punished now, and not just a warning. It's getting ridiculous on both ends. I shouldn't have to be careful who I respond to just because the other guy is doing something wrong.
