ID42 made 390m on a 165m budget which by best estimates means it broke even with it's box office run. So it was profitable in the long run.

75million of that was from China. A substantial amount. If casting Angelababy was a driving factor in audience turn out then pandering to the asian markets probably helped push the movie into profitability.

It's extremely unlikely that casting a hot asian chick in small supporting roll would turn away Western audiences so pandering to asian markets is very lucrative, which is why they did it so much.
