Oldfags, tell us about VHS bargain bins from the 80's/90's. From what I understand, tapes of 'mainstream' movies retailed between $50 and $100 US, depending on the film's popularity and age. But bargain bin titles generally went for under $10, including some designed to be sold as low as 99 cents. What kind of films were in the bargain bins? What were the best of the bunch?
>>221405356Shit nobody wanted, generally. Not even fun sfuff like the movie you posted. By the 90s VHS tapes weren’t close to being as expensive as you described, though.
>>221405356So this one time my mom heard about this guy selling his old VHS recordings (back then you'd only buy a movie once in a while, most of the time you'd record on a VHS if something good was on tv and build a collection). So we went and picked out a couple of cassettes, one was the The Flash pilot from 1990.One was the Hanna Barbera Spruce Goose movie which we later found out had a chunk missing in the middle because I guess it stopped recording for a while and he didn't notice or something. And the last one I remember, was an episode (or two) of Visionaries - Knights of the Magical Light.I think we only saw it once, when a friend I loaned it to accidentally recorded on it. He did give me a different VHS recording in return, but I can't remember what was on it.
>>221405356Man you could get fucking anything for under 10 bucks. It was amazing. Part of the appeal was seeing all the great art, stickers, holographic covers, stolen directors cuts with shots saying DO NOT DISTRIBUTE UNDER PENALTY OF LAW.
The best part was every Goodwill had a private viewing booth with a lockable door where you could watch the vhs before purchase. They were covered in jizz and cigarette butts but hey, any port in a storm.
>>221405770I forgot about taping over those tabs.Been a long time.

>>221405356I'll never forget getting Hackers on VHS for 5.99 back in 1997. I didn't realize such a movie existed
>>221406022I remember you now. Excellent trolling with r/conspiracyII… very instructive, I’ll grant you that.
>>221405356>What kind of films were in the bargain bins?It didn't matter. Tapes were always shagged out to the point of unwatchability by the time they got there.
I don't even really remember buying VHS tapes, we just rented it
Robot Holocaust is fucking hilarious
Our Blockbuster would constantly give us late charges even though we returned it on time. Then I moved to another town and that Blockbuster tried charging me for Return of the Jedi like they never received it. I just refused to pay and that was the end of it. I don’t miss Blockbuster.
>>221407769>tfw you you were a soft rich kid who never visited thrift stores cuz your parents we’re bourgeois pigs.
>>221407862You never went to the cooler non corporate knockoffs? Hell Hollywood Video had every gore documentary and mondo film you could ask for. Like this:h̸͚͒t̵͕̃t̶̫́p̴̪̋s̶̨͊:̴̨̌/̴̮̓/̶̙͑ẉ̶͋w̷̗͝w̵̩̏.̶̫͆ě̴͙f̷̫͑f̸̟̕ė̵͖ď̵̠u̵͇͗p̵̨̆m̷̜̎o̵̱̓v̴̳̀i̵̛ͅe̶͆͜s̷͈̎.̶͕͘c̷̨̓o̵̼͋m̵̧̄/̸̥͝

>>221405416>Not even fun sfuff like the movie you posted.Nigger, what? Wizard Video slop was exactly the kind of stuff that ended up in bargain bins. Those films were MOSTLY made for video, even if some had a limited theatrical appearance. Video is where they made the cash.Sports blooper tapes were also common for some reason. Those things were all over the place.
