But I think that word of mouth did basically work in that people were tricked into seeing it, and some were even tricked into thinking they liked it.But then the studio mistook the astroturfed popularity, and thus fake success, as real popularity and calculated that Supergirl would therefore have all the Superman fans go to see it. Except the Superman fans had to be bribed, cajoled and gaslit into seeing it into the first place, so they didn't turn up.Star Wars sequels are perhaps the greatest accomplishment of this process, in that they managed to trick people for so much money for 2 subsequent movies. But in the end the astroturfing still fails.
