Why don't we have kino cover art for movies anymore? I feel like its a lost art, what they used to do for VHS cover was so creative and now everything is so boring and lame.
Commercial illustration in general is dead. The answers as to why are all fairly obvious, but there's so many random 20th century print ads, album covers, promotional art that look so awesome that are more or less forgotten and irreplicable today. VHS tape covers are just the tip of the iceberg. It's genuinely awe inspiring to look back at how skilled some of the nameless people were working on the dregs of culture.Hand drawn art is so sick it just makes me want to die.
I have very formative early memories of walking through blockbuster and looking at cases like this. I'd always sneakily go into the horror section to scare myself. This one always scared the fuck out of me. So did the black and white resident evil 2 cover.
Graham Humphreys is GOAT.
