This is what drags the film down. In the scene where the girl is chased by the Big Black Boogeyman, the actor is clearly a white man in blackface, and it looks stupid. I read that Griffith did it this way because he segregated his cast and thought it indecent for a black man to share a scene with a white woman. Yes, he was really that racist. But leaving aside the matter of racism, it just looks dumb and doesn't work cinematically.
