Rewatching Community (it's back on Netflix) is a wild ride.
Funny to see how fast characters will get Flanderized.
Chevy claimed Harmon's writing only got worse so that means he thinks the first season is peak Community.

eccentric asian guy played by ken jeong dresses up as a drow elf with another character acknowledging that it looks like blackface, which is the joke. 2020 george floyd hysteria made streaming services panic and start to pull anything that may be used against them
>>
I wanted to say that chang got the worst of it but its not even flanderisation, they just changed the character from eccentric teacher to pathetic annoying creature that is less than human
>>
>so the group is going to be 5 people that become friends and 1 old guy who never feels like a part of the group and you constantly think what is he doing there
What was dan harmon thinking with this one. No, Chevy chase is not funny, being clumsy and stupid is not funny, and saying mildly inappropriate stuff is not funny

First 3 seasons are kino before it falls off a cliff and the characters become completely flanderised.

Chevy is the best actor in the entire show. Also Shirley is in the same boat as him as the odd one out too.
>>
>>221452853
Yeah they really fucked up his character. He was way better in the first season as a sort of unhinged, malevolent adversary for the group to face off against from time to time. I never found him funny at all after he stops being a teacher.

first season was kino. Unfortunately they found success with doing movie parodies and so season 2 onwards went full retard with it.
I loved the show when it focused on classes with whacky shenanigans like the crazy pottery guy and good will hunting professor.
The show was fine till the season 3 hiatus, but dropped off completely when it returned with that awful Chang the dictator arc.
We don't speak about season 4.
Season 5 was surprisingly bad, with one of the worst season finales in the history of television.
Season 6 was surprisingly good

season 1 is ass because nearly every character is miscast, it only worked when they rewrote the characters to fit their actors. jeff is not charming
>>221452917
the thing is that writers write characters differently once they see the actors in the roles. in the pilot, pierce is genuinely likeable then chevvy, who is a natural a-hole, gets the part written for him

>>221454326
you're not wrong about the miscasting (particularly of troy as a jock) but S1 shits on the others so hard it's not even funny
overarching plot > random shit
>>
Show only worked with Jeff as the main character. Once Abed, Annie and Troy started getting more screentime it went to shit.
Changing the love interest from Britta to Annie but then never actually doing anything with it made the show feel aimless too, especially when Jeff gets his degree then immediately goes back to greendale. Just a bunch of flanderized characters having meaningless wacky reddit adventures and spinning its wheels until it rightfully got canceled
>>
>>221453081
agree with this mostly but upon rewatch season 3 is really not good (aside from a few episodes like remedial chaos theory and the law and order one). season 1 is the absolute peak (the jeff & britta show) and then season 2 it becomes the abed show and gets weaker.
season 4 is dire, season 5 starts ok and falls off a cliff and season 6 does the best it can (and is not bad, frankie is a really good edition) but having the dean as a main character is extremely annoying
>>
>>221454326
you need to rewatch episode 1, I just rewatched it
Pierce was always an asshole and spent the entire episode 1 making creepy passes at Shirley, which is pointed out
He spends the second episode failing the assignment by sheer egoism
I feel Pierce came out almost fully baked, granted they toned up his antagonism and bigotry
>>
>>221452917
the whole point of his character is because he was old, he had life experience and was able to impart some of that wisdom onto jeff (the pottery episode, the std fair episode, the episode after he got dumped etc.). he also got along well with troy because they were both extremely immature (e.g. laughing at "ass burgers").
then harmon just decided to make him into an asshole and obviously chevy disagreed and said what he said and got written out of the show
>>
>>221454451
I just can't believe how biggest wasted opportunity Jeff teaching was.
They literally cover it in two episodes:
>one with the prisoners
>and one where Annie attends his class

I still remember when I first discovered Community, I watched all of S1 in a day. This was a few months before S2 started so hype was through the roof. About halfway through S2 I realised this isn't the same show anymore and I was devastated. There were still some good episodes here and there but the show overall just didn't have the same vibe as S1
>>
>>221454727
it's still a comfort show for me (particularly S1 like you say), I love the balance between humor and heart and seeing jeff become less selfish
>>
>>221454677
my head canon says "yes"
also I read that one of the ideas pitched for season 2 was Briita going to Jeff's place after the tranny dance and Annie opens the door, while wearing Jeff's shirt.
>>
>>221454727
Agree with this totally. First season has a very hopeful tone and you see everyone growing and changing for the better.
Then you get to season 2 and onwards and everyone is cynical and mean and given up
>>
>>221454713
Its a line from the show you retard
>>
>>221453081
in hindsight, the finale of S1 was stupid. even jeff's reasoning "slater makes me feel like the guy I want to be, britta makes me feel like the guy I already am" is contradicted earlier in the drunk dial episode (where slater is shown as low maintenance and he has to work on himself for britta). that episode also clearly showed he was meant to end up with britta, only for him to fumble at the one yard line. obviously if he had ended up with britta they wouldn't have been able to go anywhere but it made no logical sense to throw THE ENTIRE BUILDUP OF S1 OUT THE WINDOW to introduce conflict at the start of s2
>>
>>221452362
All of Harmon's shows fall off after the second season. Guy cannot stay consistent.

I don't know what the consensus on Paint Ball was but I liked the first one a lot and was actually happy when the second came around. Every subsequent one was bullshit and I lost interest when they started doing parallel universe shit. I don't know what season Gus from breaking bad was in but that must have been the worst one because that's when I stopped watching

first paintball was kino. second was a 2 parter on a larger scale, was good but I still liked the first one.
subsequent ones were just a mess. the season 4 finale in particular had to be not only the worst episode of Community, but easily one of the worst episodes in the history of television. not a surprise really since most of the ideas were directly lifted from reddit

Season 1 > Season 3 > Season 2 > Power Gap > Season 6 > Season 5 > Black Hole Gap(e) > Season 4

Season 3 gets better and better with every rewatch. The high concept episodes are some of the most fun episodes in the entire series, it's more uneven in quality than season 2 is but the peaks are also way higher. Season 2 feels like it sits between 2 worlds, one is the more grounded school life of season 2, the other is the more outrageous high concept side, this is why I prefer season 3, it's because it fully leans into the gimmick and more experimental episodes.

Chevy is a notorious asshole and a ton of people who have worked with him have said so. Joel even made a comment a while back on Rosenbaum's podcast that Gillian, whom the entire rest of the cast has consistently described as the professional amongst them, told Chevy to fuck off and quit if he hated being there so much.

Community is a fun show in retrospect because while Chevy Chase was the star at its filming and all the execs would bend over backward for him. Now it's the opposite with Chevy's legacy tarnished and near the whole cast having blown up or be part of a way bigger show.

Donald Glover has his whole ass career, Joel Mchale has done steady work, hosted two talk shows, and now hosts a game show, Gillian Jacobs has Invincible for at least another 4-5 seasons, Alison Brie had Mad Men and Bojack Horseman, Ken Jeong has his own show and has Masked Singer, Jim Rash won an oscar.
Only Danny Pudi and Yvette Nicole Brown didn't do much after.

Season 3 is really letdown by some really bad creative decisions. Troy and Britta have zero chemistry and then you have the Chang stuff which starts kind of fun with him as a security guard but then goes off the deep end
Still has some of my favorite episodes though, I love the Glee Club one and the Law and Order one and the Pierce videogame

Same. They show up a few other times as well in the background.
>>
>>221467483
season 1 had actual characters and an overarching plot (jeff wants to get with britta, fuckups try to get their lives together), as well as a more fleshed out school. also by far the best use of chang. also, they were all genuinely good people in season 1.
season 2 didn't stray too far from this formula but the characters became noticeably shittier people and plots less grounded and season 3 changed considerably to the point where it was barely about the community college.
so no, it's not contrarianism when there is an objective best season and it's season 1.

The rapid flanderization was intentional, the whole show is a meta look at sitcom and television tropes, it's not even subtle about it so you are kind of retarded to not get that

What if the show is just showing you through the progressions of each season how much each character opens up and shows their true selves more openly? I'd like to think it's one of those special qualities The Group has. But who am I kidding, it's very clearly The Greendale Effect.
>>
>>221472986
FACT!
>>
>>221452362
>that means he thinks the first season is peak Community.
Which is true.
Harmon lampooned the fact the show was getting more cartoony as it went, which was never an acceptable excuse.
And S4 is better than anything that came after it, btw. Harmon's impotent rage at its very existence is hilarious.
>>
>>221462764
Harmon was fired and some dudes took over. Harmon came back for S5 onwards, but to this day he's still mindbroken by what happened.

>>221476320
>And S4 is better than anything that came after it, btw.
Accurate. The finale might be pure shit, but I rate it higher because it has Pierce and Troy. The body swapping episode was hilarious
>>
>>221475212
Rewatching it I have a lot more respect for Mchale this time around. He really did a good job at keeping Jeff being a legit and likeable character, especially where you can tell in the later seasons where Harmon constantly tried to push his favorite pet/self-insert Abed into being at the front of near every major plotline.
>>
>>221452362

Modern Alison looks better than peak Gilly.

Season 1 is best, it's a timeless clever sitcom
Everything after that is painfully 2010s, and the over-reliance on abed and playing favorites with actors rather than the being egalitarian with the character ensemble ruined the show almost immediately when season 2 started
