I don't think time is actually a thing. I think it's just our way of measuring change. Stuff happens, we remember it, and we call that sequence "time." Whether time is fundamentally real or not, the concept works well enough that it might as well be. But I think that's why something like traveling back in time will never be a reality, but it does work in a simulation.
