First one was shot analogue, second digital when it was still very much shit.
But, it has been shown with remasters that the digital movies from those time actually had a lot of details hidden by filters and formating it to theathers made for analogue movies.

I sat in awe watching Disney's newest Peter Pan movie and comparing it with the critically ravaged Hook. A supposedly bad Spielberg movie from the 90s looks like a fucking masterpiece compared to anything today

It's not as much digital (which is a still a downgrade from film), but the lazy lighting practices that digital enables. Basically what De Palma says here >>221481241

I think the picture is trying to tell us the French aren't descended from the La Tene culture nor do they have any trace of Indo-European steppe ancestry. The average French person today looks like an Arab with traces of Germanic, Nordic, and Italian heritage.

i was surprised to learn Hook isn't a beloved childhood classic. or that contemporary critics at least didn't like it.
it's strange how a Rotten Tomatoes survey of hundreds of critics in the 2010s gives a 97% score to a Marvel flick, but critics in the 90s were divided on e.g. Hook or The Mummy.

Pay attention to the costumes, specially Obélixs pants

It's very bizarre, you're right. Critical standards have fallen off a cliff
