It's a popular opinion that his honor and selflessness got him killed but i'd say it was him being so squeamish and stubborn.

Calls Lucerys and Jace bastards and she is shocked.Rhaenyra tells Alicent she has had daeron for two days. Says she should execute him but instead will send him to the wall as he hasn't committed any crimes like aegon and aemond.Alicent wants to see daeron. Rhaenyra tells Daeron he will go to the wall but stays quiet. Alicent comes in and Rhaenyra can tell Alicent doesn't know him by her face. Fake Daeron is a son of a merchant and says ormund forced him to bleach his hair and play the part of a prince otherwise his mother would be hanged.
