If you're not gay, his films are terrible. They're full of gay coded male gaze and fetishism.
>>
>>221565229
I know he's received his share of institutional recognition and at the very least gets namedropped in histories of the new wave as a theorist but it seems like very few people have watched the films themselves. At least when I saw him mentioned on forums and stuff in the past he seemed to be thought of as antiquated and out of step with the rest of the cahiers filmmakers

Are you a Watkins fan? I managed to get a hold of a pdf of the uncut version of his essay, Notes on the Media Crisis, recently (there's an abridged version that's a lot easier to find). His conception of the 'Monoform' is like the exact opposite of Schrader's idea of 'transcendental cinema'.

Nah. Pacific Rim is definitely better than Star Wars 3 in several imporatant aspects: Direction, cinematography, acting. To be frank, Star Wars 3 is outright abysmal in all of those. Worse than almost all others in that list.
Worst of all in terms of acting is either Dark Knight or John Wick. Worst in terms of direction, Parasite or Top Gun. Worst in terms of cinematography, John Wick or Star Wars 3. That's where I'll leave it. I'd have to rewatch them all to judge them on some minor aspects (editing, sound editing, score, lighting, set building, visual effects) - but the Star Wars one probably isn't in the lower half for those.
As for which one is the best, probably unironically Whiplash, perhaps even for how straightforward and simple it is, in contrast to most other stuff on that list. Perfect Days is simpler and more straightforward, of course, but then there was so little effort behind that one ... dunno.
Gotta add: I have not seen Sentimental Value, hence it didn't factor into anything I've said.

>My only encounter with Federico Fellini occurred in a toilet. This was in 1966, when he was one of the most celebrated and admired film directors in the world. I was 26 years old and I had recently directed my first Sydney Film Festival. I was on my first visit to one of the legendary European festivals. Venice was, in fact, the oldest of all the film festivals having been founded in 1933, during the era of Mussolini and Fascism. This being the first international film festival I'd attended, I knew nobody there. The friends I would make in the future were unknown to me then; I was a babe in the wood, a novice at the game. But waiters offered glasses of champagne and I drank a few, realising, as I did so, that I was drinking on an empty stomach, not having had the time for dinner that evening. After about an hour of such 'star-gazing', several glasses of champagne, a few bites of canapes and the occasional desultory conversation, I felt an urgent need to find a toilet. With an increasing sense of urgency I sought a 'cabinet' and, when I finally located one, the urge had become close to desperate. There I was at last, standing up against the porcelain, feeling a sense of relief. A man was standing next to me, a big man who looked vaguely familiar. I stole a glance at him. Could it be? It was. Urinating next to me was none other than Federico Fellini. I can only excuse what happened next because of the excitement of the occasion, the champagne and my youthful naivete. I turned towards the great man. "Mr. Fellini," I began. And I peed all over his shoes. One result of this brief, unfortunate, encounter was that I learnt a new Italian word: "Stronzo!" It means "Asshole." It was well deserved.

I cared personally, it was frankly a gut punch, he was about to go shoot another movie which I was excited for. Last thing he did was a short for some festival where the director had to collaborate with a musician to make a short. I saw all of those, most were shit except Davies (was literally a single three minute static shot with Davies reading a poem in the background and it was beautiful) and Zhangke. Maybe a couple of other decent ones but these two from the top of my head.

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a few Gregg Araki films I like, but I'm aware he's a very revisionist director and I'd like to get the best PQ release for both the original theatrical cut, and subsequent alternate cuts. For the particularly expensive and hard-to-find ones I'll probably put them on Soulseek uncompressed. I'm aware the Teenage Apocalypse trilogy recently had a Criterion set with all three 'restored' and Mysterious Skin has been revised too with a physical release pending. But it's really difficult to find info on what previous releases these films have had & what cuts, which releases have correct aspect ratios or not, bitstarving/macroblocking, etc. Does anyone know where would be the best place to ask about this?

- The Living End
- Totally F**ked Up
- The Doom Generation
- Nowhere
- Mysterious Skin
>>
>>221584759
oh and also the release info on bluray.com is very incomplete e.g. no Nowhere DVDs listed even though they exist, so I've checked there

>>221584759
Probably https://forum.blu-ray.com/
You can see all the releases of any specific film, here using Doom Generation as an example

If the film is popular enough it'll have a written review and screenshots. The release pages also list specs.

its the same with paintings or drawings. it can be highly technical and detailed visually, but if it doesnt give you some context or idea, its boring. 2001 for example is boring as hell, and thats not even considered arthouse but it should be, because its mostly visual.

so... something like The Sandlot or Indiana Jones has no artistic value whatsoever? Sindbad, Ulisse, Thief of Bagdad, Samurai Rebellion, Them!...worthless slop for the masses? According to a stoner like yourself of course.

>as the worst auteur
At least he's considered an auteur.
Frankly, M Night Shamalamadingdong could also technically be considered an "auteur" on face value. But he's so fucking bad at everything that he simply ... isn't.
>>
>>221596735
Everything has artistic value, even something like The Room, but that doesn't mean anon has to appreciate that artistic value for his own intellectual enjoyment or lived experience.
Fact is, we all make choices for what we do or do not consider worthwhile as "art".
>>
now watching

i was playing Oblivion for the first time and I realised that Terrance Stamp voices the villain which reminded me of The Hit which reminded me i should watch this
>>
>>221597248
An auteur cannot be formulaic, they must re-discovered the artform from ground up for every single movie. They must never repeat a 'style' from one film to the next.
>>
>>221597652
>they must re-discovered the artform from ground up for every single movie.
Nah. That's an avantgardist. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that forced "forefront" bullshit.
An auteur is literally what you say it isn't: Someone with a distinctive style or approach, who is mostly independent from what others do or what the artform looks like in general or what people expect of him. And, of course, is the driving force ("author") behind his work.

Amarcord was mid. I get that Freddy doesn't like plot but this could have used one. It fell flat at trying to be funny and also why do these pasta niggas have to talk like cartoon characters all the time? Spanish is basically the same language and they don't talk like parodies of themselves. The visuals were nice.
>>
>>221598409
It’s a shame Luke Perry never made it as an A list movie star. He had the looks and the talent.

Monteiro's lady not as good as him it seems. Decent film though, with some gorgeous compositions. Will explore more.

Actually those kind of popular films are more canonically durable than the "artistic" ones. Spielberg, Disney and Hitchcock will almost certainly be known about in 1,000 years whereas no one will know about or care about any /film/ level canon.

Tbh, french is kinda mid sometimes... it doesn't have the colorfulness of portuguese, spanish or italian and the guttural sounds are kinda strange.
>>
>>221601284
French is the best of them. The guttural sounds are charming and it also has nicer vowel sounds than the others (which are far from ugly, but just a bit too obvious/superficial in their charms imho).
>>
>>221601284
I like it, especially how weirdly different it is from the other ones.

The most underrated romance language in my opinion is Occitan.

Yup. It’s from an earlier scene where Maggie Cheung’s character the Persian sorceress intentionally gives them bad equipment to mess with them- the princess flies off with the boot and Ouyang Fen gets a box of bees

“Wow, thanks for all this stuff. I didn’t realize you were so loyal.”

“Yeah of course. Just try out that box of enchanted bees and you will see how ‘loyal’ i really am!”
