Unfortunately, this movie hit way too close to home, at least up until the one wish willow part.

I used to be the timid guy hopelessly in love with a girl who was also one of my closest friends, and I couldn't bring myself to tell her how I felt. I also had a friend who was hooking up with her behind my back even though he knew I liked her, and he'd give me terrible advice just to sabotage me.
The horror parts of this movie didn't do much for me compared to the hell Bear was going through before he broke the willow, because I've been there.

So here's my take: Bear and Nikki were never meant to be together. Even if she'd given him a chance if he'd confessed his feelings on this scene, their relationship would've eventually fallen apart, and they would've ended up miserable and resenting each other.

Why? Because in relationships with that kind of dynamic, at some point there's usually a brief window where the guy can actually make a move, flirt with her, let her know he's interested, and she'll be receptive. Maybe she already liked him a little, or maybe she was open to developing feelings because she admired him, and that could've turned into something more if he'd actually gone for it.
But he let that window close out of fear. Like he says at the beginning of the movie: "Don't tell her. She's too good. You'll lose her."
Meanwhile, she kept living her life. She met other guys, had other experiences, and eventually realized that whatever Bear had to offer just wasn't what she wanted anymore.

He'd already lost her long before the movie even started. It was already over. There was nothing he could've done by that point.
The only scenario I can realistically see working is if he'd actually started dating Sarah. Nikki might've gotten jealous of losing her place as the most important woman in his life and started seeing him differently. That's a real thing that happens sometimes.

But Bear was too much of an pussy to ever look to his left.

I don't think being deep is the sign of good writing.
A story that makes sense, has consistent characters, and a compelling narrative is far more important.
There are some good monologues in there. But really, at no point did the characters feel like they were doing stupid things just so that the story could happen. Their actions felt quite natural. And they all felt like real people with individual personalities and motivations.
That's surprisingly very rare

I can kind of see why everyone is certain he was a rapist, it's not a testament to the movies quality though. If they wanted to make him a rapist make the gift something actually rape-y, like a demonic Spanish fly or something, that would have been much more clear. There is one moment where, when speaking with Sarah, he mentions that he has sleeping pills in his pocket, and paired with why he brought up that he had them, the subtext is pointing to him maybe spiking people's drinks on occasions. The problem is the rest of his character is completely discordant with that. Generally people who spike people's drinks are charming sociopaths, not weird losers, and they certainly wouldn't have a problem with getting rid of a demonically possessed girl that is fucking with their method. Ideally you give more context which reinforces this characterization too, rather than just weird moments that can be read one way or another. As it stands he is just a loser who broke a novelty toy and then dated a BPD chick, and the majority consensus on this film is fucking retarded.

line is actually really weird to come out of nowhere after he called her that thing she doesn't like. Then Bear breaks the thing right after at the 20 minute mark and what little we see of real Nikki isn't enough to suggest whether she liked him or not. And now Ian calls and she flips out and there's still an hour left. Just too much happening too fast so far.

Also, people were acting like he stuck it up her butt right after he broke it. They sleep in bed together with no sex, he's led to believe she was grieving AND on drugs, and she flat out says she knows he likes her and admits she likes him too. Obviously it's a selfish wish, but he's very clearly holding back and unsure if it worked and had no strong reason to believe it did until later. Even the blue hairs on twitter screech about how she actually did like him. (Granted this was his chance to just say yes when she asks at the window and he blew it, but still.)

Also also, it's patently obvious the wish didn't make Nikki love him and instead made some separate entity take control of her body with the express purpose of loving him. I mean, even without the random "What the fuck" moments from real Nikki, the entity has her knowledge and memories but is instantly asking questions like a tourist after taking over.

Barker said there's no monkey paw catch to the willow but that's just not true. He's created a complicated, albeit interesting, resolution to the wish.

The love square is an interesting angle too. Will report back when it's over.

That is the point. The movie makes you question the intentions of all the characters and the way the wish works. That's what makes it successful. If it was just a straightforward "she becomes a crazy bitch" story then it would be lame.
