Part of it might be Gunn has merely a producer credit on this, so its other writer and director were trying to copy Gunn's style and have it be "More of what he did with Superman, but in space" but they lacked the talent to pull it off and there should have been a different, less derivative approach.

I think Gunn wants to have his vision, his quirks as a filmmaker, his tastes, all be the base of this film line.

If Gunn cared about making a successful cinematic universe, he would have ordered the making of a Batman or Wonder Woman movie.
But he personally decided to change Supergirl into a sloppy drunk. So when the idea came to make a Supergirl movie, he jumped at the bit so that his personal vision could be glorified

People go to fewer movies because they suck now. My fiance literally asks me once or twice a week if there's anything good in theaters at the moment, and after seeing the options just says: "nevermind, we'll just watch it online."

On the flip side we go out to art theaters to see stuff like The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future or a re-release of Harry Potter or Spirited Away all the time.

I can't remember the full context but basically they're fighting a bunch of bad guys in the last two minutes of the movie and after they beat them all there's a giant explosion and the flames turn slow motion around the Vietnamese girl with a British accent from Mars as some Billy Elish knockoff starts the: "Hey, don't count yourself out yet."
