>>221627884>get a professional Fencer>make the fight scene look like a light sparring kendo session
>>221627884You only need to gently brush someone with a lightsaber to kill them so it would make sense fights would reward caution.Besides you know and like these characters that's what really makes it good.
>>221628056who is this darth vaderwhy does he wear the mask
>>221627884They were still catching their breath after the battle on Mustafar.
These same boomers complained that Phantom had too much choreography.
>>221628056You just know if this was made today it would be done with huge amounts of spectacle. Just look at how Vader fights in the Rogue One, and that should give you an idea.
>>221628219It was complaining how the choreography came off as too rehearsed and not natural. That it felt less like a proper duel, and more like a performance. And that is a legit criticism of the prequel duels. Too much flipping and spinning, and not enough intensity.

alex guiness was like 80 years old and probably incontenent from being gay
>>221628318That’s why the sequels are full of “duels” where people just flail the lightsabers around like batons while screaming
>geriatricsApparently Vader was 41 and Obi-Wan was 57. Go figure.
>>221628354Everything about the sequels were a disaster. That doesn't make the prequels flaws go away.
>>221628219>>221628318This is why nu-Star Wars unironically has the best fight scenes. Theyve found the perfect middle ground
>>221627884In 1939, we already had Errol Flynn, so there was no excuse for this to be so boring. I think it was the fact that it was a lightsaber that impressed people.
>>221628491Vader can’t turn around wtf?
>>221628491This looks shit

>>221628548How do you expect him to turn around? He's got two robots. He can't even run.
>>221628491looks extremely slow and rehearsed. at this point it's like they are imitating capeshit choreography and pace, that the actors/stunt actors have grown up on. darth vader looks slow asshit like some giant troll swinging a 300 lb. axe. he just stands there as she does a dumb pointless somersault.lightsabers also just look like the kind you can buy with virtually no effects when they clash.

>>221627884It's about as good as the duel between Vader and Obi-Wan in episode III.
>>221629078wew lads that force push at the end was insanely cheesy
>>221628491This looks like absolute trash.
Haven't seen any of the nuWars. Did any of them do a light saber battle that knocks off the sword fight from Raiders?
>>221629078This is overwrought. The original choreography was fine, Lucas’s insistence on in camera glow effects for the blades was the problem. It led to weak props. From Empire on they were using solid blades and rotoscoping. If you speed up and tighten the original scene, it works surprisingly well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVqg7sTcra0It’s even in character for Vader to start out cautious. He doesn’t want to make the same mistake again and charge wildly. You know, like he is doing in the version you posted.

>>221627884>If you strike me down now, I will become the most comfiest blanket in the galaxy
>>221627884That's the best sword fight in Starwars by far. There are few things as boring as elaborate laser sword fights masquerading as cinema.
>>221628491Must be trollin'. Using the force to block saber blows is stupid too imo.
>>221628491these shit lightsabers look like glowsticks
>>221628591he's hot. i want to have sex with him.
>>221630219If you can choke someone from a distance, why can’t you stop their swing? Think about it for a second. Darth Maul is able to shove Obi Wan so hard with the force that he falls over. Blocking a swing is way easier than that.
>>221630284They’re basically almost transparent pvc tubes with a string of LEDs in them. They’re top of the line cosplay toys. Problem is, studios saw them being used in fan films, and thought “they look good enough”. They cause ambient light, so there’s good reason to use them. But you still need to animate the blade effects over the top. Pretty sure that’s what they did in The Force Awakens, in that snow fight. That’s the best of both worlds from a lighting perspective. But tv shows are too cheap to add in the after effects, so you’re left with cosplay quality blades. Also they’re heavier than the carbon fibre blades they used during Revenge of the Sith. Both Hayden and Ewan preferred those. That’s a taste thing though, I always felt that the lightsaber blades had got a little too light and twirly by then. They moved like all the weight was in the hilt. The metal rods they used in the Phantom menace looked more like swords in motion. But they had to replace the bent rods after each take so that obviously ate up time.
>>221628491So does he hack her to pieces now that he has both blades?
>>221630918I'm not debating the possibility of it, I just think it looks dumb and is used as a crutch for choreography instead of actually coming up with good swordplay. Not even the sequels used this dumb force block gimmick. I also think that it doesn't suit Vader in particular, given that all his previous instances of lightsaber combat didn't include force blocks. It's inconsistent with his style.
>>221628318Bantha fucking pudu.
>>221631173never watched it but i bet he throws her around for 5 minutes
>>221631206Looks like overchoreographed shit.
>>221631295That's just how they fought historically. If you don't like it then that is too bad, but this is how jedi fought during their prime. Only fat people get triggered by this.
I've noticed this shitty looking occurrence that has been appearing in Star Wars every since Disney bought it, where it's like someone will hold someone up in the air with the force. It always looks fucking ridiculous. Originally, in Star Wars, you could use the force to push your opponent in battles. Of course you could grab things with it, but in battles, its main use was to push someone or throw something at them. Disney now has added "force hold" where you like lift someone up, hold them in mid air for a few seconds, and then throw them. I can't think of any examples, but I know I've seen it several times since Disney bought it. It amazes me that shitty ideas like that get through. I can't believe that no one at any point said that that looks stupid and you can't do that. They just add shit like that and it gets used every time with no one along the line telling them to stop. Has anyone else noticed this? I can't believe I'm the only one who hates this and thinks it's a huge problem that makes duels look extra retarded. Maybe other people realize how stupid it looks, but I've never seen anyone say anything about it.
>>221631379>That's just how they fought historically. No it isn't.
>>221628491Even in the context of this being Vader basically playing with a scared child this is pretty dogshit.
>>221631083>They moved like all the weight was in the hiltWell it is, that might be an important thing to note here
>>221631492>Disney now has added "force hold" where you like lift someone up, hold them in mid air for a few seconds, and then throw themDooku does this in the prequels to my memory
>>221631492>someone will hold someone up in the air with the forceEpisode 3 had this
>>221631295In my opinion you look like shit.
>>221631492the prequels invented that but its ok when they do it
>>221631733>>221631759Well III was always the goofiest prequel anyway. It's still weird that, of all the things from the prequels that they ignored, the thought that this one ridiculous moment was worth repeating.>>221631825I never said that. I've always thought that episode III was the worst Star Wars film before the sequels came out. It's about tied with the Last Jedi.
>>221631759Am I the only one who thinks that the choreography in episode III is bad? People who hate the choreography in the prequels altogether don't count. I mean, it's bad in comparison to episodes I and II. There's a cartoonishness about it that I and II don't have. The other two movies look like real, authentic sword fighting that could have actually happened at some time or place. I thought that the choreography in I and II was really good, and then with III, it became what critics were saying it looked like in I and II. III does that all across the board. It embodies everything that people who hated I and II said that they hated them for even when those movies didn't do that. It's everything that people didn't like about I and II amplified and inexplicably it's the most acclaimed prequel. It doesn't make any sense. II was the one that was made to please fans and critics while taking all of the criticisms of I into account. III was like George Lucas spitefully shitting on the audiences out of annoyance, and, somehow, people liked it.
>>221628766>What if I’m not an 8 year oldThen you shouldn't be watching Star Wars.
>>221631701Maybe it’s meant to be in the lore, but it makes for a worse sword fight.
>>221632269The movies are enjoyable if you're an adult though, so why?
>>221632435well a mentally retarded man like you should be able to enjoy the colorful cartoons then too
>>221627884The lightsabers were an afterthought at that point. It was like seasoning, it wasn't the "meat" of the dish like it is now with the lightsabers and the force. The movie Star Wars was huge at release because of the convincing VFX with the spaceships, space battles, the aliens, the other worlds, the wonderful score, and the thrilling captivating adventure plot.
>>221631206cool

>>221632976>No, because the cartoons are actually for kids and the films aren't.lmaoo
>>221632141I halfway agree, with the exception that I think Attack of the Clone’s choreography sucks. For the actual duel at the end, that is. The arena stuff is fun, but that’s also where the effort went. When Dooku faces off with Obi Wan, it is slow and weakened by the heavy use of cuts to accommodate switching between Christopher Lee and his stunt double. Then we have the close up heavy fight with Anakin, to show off the lighting, and finally, the same stunt double furiously fighting a cgi yoda. It’s all a bit toothless. The intent was there but it never came together. Another big mistake was giving Dooku elements of the fencer gimmick, like his curved hilt or his salute, then having him fight in the same way as everyone else did. He was a lukewarm follow up to Darth Maul’s wushu style bo-staff work. Honestly, each of Lucas’s six film’s duels all have a distinct feel from each other. Star Wars was classical kendo, tightly done and competently choreographed, hindered by sub par performers (an elderly Guiness and Prowse in a restrictive suit), and flimsy props.Empire Strikes back was Bob Anderson to his full potential. Building off of the kind of western fencing that was in vogue during the golden age of hollywood, and adding in some more medieval inspired techniques. This is the peak of that style.
>>221633116Return of the Jedi is similar, but apart from when Luke rushes Vader, the edge has been taken off, and the clashes are shorter and simplified. There are a few sequences in particular where Luke and Vader just hit left, right, left, right, or up, down, up, down. Once you’ve seen it you can’t unsee it.Phantom Menace is the peak of Nick Gillard’s choreography. There aren’t too many twirls, and most of them are done briefly in gaps between the action by Ray Park. He was a high level wushu performer, so they looked crisp when he did them. Overall the action in this does have that early 2000’s wushu edge, but it’s mostly simple attacks done blisteringly fast. I already covered Attack of the Clones, but from my opinion, this is when Kyle Rowling (the stunt double for Dooku) gets too involved and changed the style. He was a big fan of fire twirling / baton style sword rotations. The main way these are different from the simpler wushu rotations is the weapon ends up in weird places that would bad in a fight, like underneath the arm or behind the back. Hayden Christensen in particular, picks this up very well, and the “Obi Ani” spin starts turning up. Revenge of the Sith is the best possible middle ground between these two styles. It’s fast and kinetic again, but everyone is throwing in sword twirls and flourishes everywhere, most obviously at the point Anakin and Obi Wan stop fighting to see who has the best “Obi Ani” spin (that’s why it’s called that). Partly because it makes no sense in a fight, and partly because Ewan is visibly way less confident, the shot is laughable. The other big problem for me is the swords got so light and the action so fast that everyone stopped using footwork, and started just walking.
>>221633164In the Phantom Menace there’s a lot of deeper stances with properly bent legs, though Ewan and Liam both have a tendency to straighten up and just walk to keep up with Ray Park. When Ewan and Hayden fight in this movie, they are just walking, and spending way too much time in distance, clashing swords.Of course I don’t need to complain about making Ian McDiarmid fight after only a few days of stunt training. We all know how much of a disaster that turned out to be.But here’s the biggest problem. Exhaustion. There are almost as many duels in Revenge of the Sith as the rest of the series. George accidentally left all his plot to the end, and had to resolve it all in one movie. The lightsaber duel used to be more of a show stopper finale. As my dad said to me as we left the theatre in 2003. “Gee, you think in a two and a half hour movie, they could have squeezed in more than two hours of lightsaber fights. I don’t think we got our moneys worth.”
>>221631201That’s fair. I guess one way to read is Vader misses the high age of dueling, and when he gets to recreate it briefly, he enjoys it. But this inquisitor disappoints him so much he ends it quickly. Plus, he wasn’t so much stronger than Luke or Kenobi that he could just bully them with the force. It is boring choreography though. Swords clashing is always more fun.
